Rental Diets Does anyone have any good rental diets for my 4 lb yorkie? Abigail will not eat. |
Assuming you mean RENAL diets for kidney disease, there are several rx diets on the market, but my CRF dog didn't like any of them and we mostly home cooked for him. DogAware.com has a good section on renal failure with some diets included, or you can speak to a veterinary nutritionist to have a diet custom made for your dog. Its hard for anyone to suggest a diet because the diet she needs will be based on the current staging of the kidney failure. With that said, it was my experience that my dog refused to eat much of anything until we got him on a treatment program, and started doing regular sub q fluids to rehydrate him and bring his numbers down. It is important to get some nutrients into your dog now, and the longer she doesn't eat the harder it's going to be to spark her appetite and get her to start eating again on her own. When we were at the point you're at now, I gave my pup anything he would eat within reason. You might try some boiled skinless and boneless chicken thighs (lower in phosphorous than breast meat) boiled and mashed sweet potato, bits of sliced and peeled apple or pear. My vet recommended good old fashioned Nilla Wafers as a treat because they're low in phosphorous. I would crumble them up and sprinkle them on his food to get him started eating. You can also try some of the baby food meat or veggies. The Beechnut brand is good because it doesn't contain onion, but always check the labels first. The more your dog eats, the more inclined she'll be to eat more, and there will be time later to transition her to a more kidney friendly diet. Hope this helps. Diana |

Oh thank God!!!!!!!! I went right off the deep end, thinking I had lost my mind completely with the "rental diet"!!!! I agree with Scoobstersmom recommendations....and as she pointed out, after she starts to eat more, she can transition to the kidney diet....I would recommend Royal Canin Kidney diet.....your vet can write you a script for it and you can get it on Chewy.com at a very good price.... |
Ha Ha! Me too at first Yorkiemom1. But I was pretty sure she wasn't renting a dog. :) She had also posted some days ago asking questions about kidney failure. Diana |

Diana, Thanks so much!! I am excited you have told me this. I will try it. She has always been a finicky eater her whole life. Now I have another yorkie, her name is Crystal and I feed her the Blue dog food and Abigail always wants to eat her food. She will eat the Blue dog food but not good for her because of the Renal Failure. Diana, that's so very much for all the information. I will try that tonight after work. I hope I am replying to this message right. I'm trying to get use to this site. I really like this site, talking to other people about your fur babies is great!! Thanks again!! |
