Gracie had a HOT SPOT. Hello! My 11 lb Yorkie, Gracie, had a hot spot on her rump several weeks ago. The area (about the size of a nickel but elliptical in shape) was an angry red, had crusty stuff around it and the hair fell out on its own. I used Witch Hazel to cleanse it and applied raw organic coconut oil 2-3 times daily to treat it. It cleared up within a couple of days. Now I believe it is healed but the skin is very dark, almost black, in contrast to the surrounding skin which is a healthy looking pinkish color. Is this normal? Will that patch of skin eventually turn a healthy pinkish color, too? Thanks for everyone's time and advise! :animal37 |
Hard to say without seeing the spot in person, but it might be something to have the vet take a look at. Could be more than a hot spot. The blackness could be an indication of a skin infection that requires oral antibiotics. |
Get it checked out, or at least give the vet a call and see if they think it's a concern. Sometimes irritation can cause color changes. My chihuahua spends months where his skin is BLACK due to allergies. Eventually it will return to pink when the seasons change. |
If it was a hot spot, then most likely the fur should return as a true "hot spot" is a staph intermedius overgrowth infection called pyoderma. A localized pyoderma is a "hot spot", it can also be diffuse / all over. If it was something else, then I don't know if the hair will return. |
All better... Gracie's sore has healed completely. All that's left is an innocuous little bump. Thanks for everyone's input! |

Whenever my dog got his shots the area always healed black for a weird reason |
This happened to my dog Thumper. It took months for his hair to grow back. I thought it wasn't healing right and kept going to the vet because I never dealt with it before. Not you can't even tell he had a hot spot. The funny thing is the hair that came back has a tint of brown where he is mostly silver and grey. |
This happened to my Mia. I used medicaded shampoo and condition from tropiclean and used hydrocortisone. I used a hydrocortisone dog spray and also purchase the cream at a local drug store. She had a scab after about a week of use and when it fell off her hair started growing again. Thankfully it never returned. You need to treat it for some time as soon as they get it, because it can return. |
