Rabies Shot Question I was reading up on rabies vaccines and I am confused as to which shot the shelter gave my dogs. My vet said he believes it is the 3 year shot as the labeling says Imrab® 3 TF (I forgot to bring the vaccine certificate with me. I actually just found it) Online the label above says it is for 3 years as well According to the Shelter paper work it says the vaccine is only good for 1 year. I don't want to re-vaccinate my dogs if it is not necessary. Is there a way to check how long the vaccine is valid for? Also does the Distemper/Parvo need to be given annually? I have been reading it can be given every 3-5 years. If it doesn't need to be given annually does the certificate state how many years it is valid? Again the certificate from the shelter states it needs to be done again in 9/16. Since I take my dogs to the dog park and to be groomed I need to be up to date on their vaccines but I do not want to over vaccinate them. I also don't want any issues with the Groomers questioning if my vaccines are not up to date since the certificate states it needs to be re-done in Sept. Ugh so much info out there on the internet it gets overwhelming at times. |
In NY state the rabies has to be given once and then another booster right before the 12th month the following year (does that make sense? So it has to be given before the one year mark again) and then it's good for I believe 4 years. It's really annoying bc I was literally one month over the year mark and had to give the vaccine again and then again the following year so that it was good for the 4 years. So my little guy had rabies 3 years in a row😤 |

First - is this rabies shot a puppy rabies or are your yorkies adults? The 1 yr and 3 yr rabies shot are *always* the exact same shot, btw. The ONLY difference is whether or not 1) this is the first rabies shot (always only good for ONE year, then need a booster, which lasts for 3 years from then on out --or-- 2) whether or not you missed the window for your revaccination of rabies....if you missed the window, then you have to start over, get a rabies shot, wait 1 year, get a booster, then go to every 3 years. As far as distemper/parvo, they should be every 3 years at the MOST. DOI is really up to 7 years according to the DOI studies, but the AAHA did a compromise and recommends the shots every 3 years at this time. Personally, at the age of 7-ish for my dogs - I'll no longer get distemper/parvo as at that age they'll have lifetime immunity; I'll only get rabies by law then. |

Unfortunately, he gives the 1 year distemper/parvo vaccine at his office. I may have to find a different Vet or clinic to get the 3 year vaccine done. |

Your rescue babies were not given the "1 yr shot". They were given the exact same 1yr or 3 yr rabies shot -- the caveat is that FOR THEM, this shot will only be good for ONE YEAR bc their previous rabies shot date is unknown. |
