Vet wants 6 mnth old off puppy food?
 

Hi

My vet here in France wants me to give my 6 month old puppy who just got spayed regular dog food instead of puppy food. More specifically he wants her on a dog food for neutered pets. Such as Royal Canin Neutered.

I am from America and I normally would switch over at the 1 year mark and I have never heard of food for neutered pets. Has anyone heard of dog food for neutered pets? Also what type of dog food do you recommend? I really dont want to put her on something specifically for neutered. She is currently on Acana Puppy.

I think it's kinda hogwash that they're recommending such a specific food - there is really no science behind that *at all*.

It's fine to switch to an adult food at 6 mths...though many of us do wait until about 8 months. Feed what feels right to you.

I feed raw by Primal or Natures Variety. Kibbles I like are Natures Logic, Natures Variety, Solid Gold, Wellness Core, Acana/Orijen...

Royal Canin is very well received all across Europe and is readidly available. I have fed it here since '70's.... over the years they have grown and developed different formulas for different stages/ages of your pets life....my dogs have all gone from "cradle to grave" on their different life stages of food....

I personally would not be taking my puppy off the puppy blend until at least 8 months old, preferentially until 12 months old....bones, brain, cell development is still actively growing and progressing, and I want them to get all the nutrition they require for every growing cell in their body, which is usually complete at 12 months old....I leave mine on puppy food until 12 months old, then move over to adult blend. Here in the States, RC Neutered blend is not available, to my knowledge....but after feeding RC for 40+ years, and never having had any issues with their formulas and tolerance in any of my dogs,you could safely transition from the puppy blend at 12 months to mini adult at a year old. I would ask specifically what the Neutered recipe has in it that the adult does not have....if the Neutered is more expensive, that could be the draw from the vet.....you can always go to the RC website and ask a nutritionist directly what the difference between the two blends are....my dogs are all very healthy and I have never broken out foods aimed specifically for neurered/spayed dogs, versus intact dogs. Contact RC....they are very happy to assist you and answer questions......
