Yogurt and Yorkies I have checked but did not find a thread where yogurt was discussed and I am sure that this concern has been. But I would like to know if a small amount of yogurt is not harmful for my Ginger. She is 9 1/2 yrs. old and I have had her for just a little over 3 yrs. She basically is in pretty good health besides the small breed problem of a collapsed trachea, which she is again taking pills for. Also Ginger is about a pound overweight. My fault. So, yogurt and vanilla ice cream; are these harmful if given as a treat a couple of times a week in tablespoon size amts??? Thank you for any help. |
I would skip the ice cream, especially if she needs to lose weight. Carrying extra weight makes collapsed trachea even harder on a dog. A lot of people will give their dogs licks of vanilla ice cream, but I worry what ingredients are really in a lot of ice creams. The risk of sugar substitutes concerns me. Even if it is real sugar, dogs don't need it (I would like to cut down the amount of refined sugar I consume too :)). Plain yogurt is okay for most Yorkies, but can be fattening if fed too much. Be sure to factor it in when calculating your dog's daily intake of food. I used to give my 9 pound boys 1/4 teaspoon a day of plain Greek yogurt. We stopped because I have to watch Max's weight. |
Yogurt is actually very good for your pup...just make sure it is not a "diet" yogurt with artificial sweeteners.....a good, wholesome, yogurt is healthy for your pup and great for the intestinal flora....I give my group yogurt on a regular basis, as a special treat....they love it, and it is healthy for them. Like anything else, just dont overdo it! I give my group cottage cheese or yogurt on a regular basis.....dont have any issues with weight on the dogs...they get alot of exercise daily, running around the yard at frequent intervals, especially if I am outside doing anything around the patio or yard....I have to add they get a lot more than a portion of a teaspoonful! |
Yogurt is great for doggies and their GI systems. Just make sure it's not artificially sweetened or anything like that. Look for high protein, low sugar/carbs. I'd take it easy on the ice cream if she is over weight...maybe do frozen yogurt? |
Some of the human yogurts contain more sugar than ice cream. I would avoid ice cream and most yogurts but plain yogurt can be good for your dog in small amounts. Watch the fat content though. |
I don't have a problem with small amounts of organic plain yogurt. In the past, I would occasionally give a small bit to my dogs, but since I don't eat dairy anymore, I don't bother with it. I would not give the ice cream. Also, a dog w/ a collapsing trachea should be kept lean and at an ideal weight. You need to get the weight off of her. I have a dog in end stage collapsing trachea and it is not an easy problem to manage, so control what you can starting w/ weight. |
I didn't know CT could be managed with a pill. How does it work? I thought they had to surgically go in there and install rings to keep the trachea open. I would also skip the ice cream. We always have Greek yogurt plain in the house. We only buy the full fat, but if you are trying to slim her down, they have the fat free kind too. |

I give Cali some kefir about every other day or so. Yorkiemom1 clued me in to making it into ice cubes and just thawing a little bit at a time. |

She enjoyed organic greek yogurt, just a little bit. I wanted to give her a treat after her medicines that wasn't a cookie or chock full of garbage or fillers. This made the whole med process a bit easier as she was as stubborn as stubborn comes and I while my pups always know I'm leader I'm not about to create a home for them where we can't reach a common ground of compromise so everyone is happy. I would steer clear of ice cream right now, at least until she's down to good weight. I know it's a little harder with CT as they can't exercise it off as easily but you can do it!! |

Yogurt and cottage cheese are great. Choose a plain yogurt, not a flavored one, to avoid problems with too much sugar. |
I eat Fage greek yogurt and gave Beowulf some a few days ago when he had diarrhea for like 4 days he loved it and made him feel better. I gave him a teaspoon the 3rd day and the 4th day and he got better. No more diarrhea:thumbup: |
I give Ziva yogurt to get her appetite going in the morning just little tips of the teaspoon. |
