Preventing yeast infections in your furbaby's ears Carter has been scratching (ever so slightly but enough for me to wonder) at one of his ears. I took him in to see Dr. Dawn this afternoon to be sure it wasn't mites. What she found was that he had a very minor yeast infection in one ear. She feels that it is caused from water in his ears after bathing. To prevent this from happening in your pup, purchase Epi-Otic and use it after baths. Squirt the liquid into the ear canal and massage it into the ear canal. Swab out the ear with a cotton ball to remove any residue that is visible. Your pup will shake out some of it and the remainder will evaporate. It looks like Carter's weight has topped out. He is still 3.1# and is 36 1/2 weeks old. He was the same weight 4 weeks ago (7 1/2 months old). I love my sweet "little" boy! |
This is great info to know, thanks! Did you purchase the Epi-Otic from the vet or is this over the counter at pet stores, etc? |
I purchased it from the vet but I believe it is available in the stores. It was $9.30 for an 8 oz bottle. What it says on the bottle is: Virbac Animal Health (brand) Epi-Otic Ear Cleanser for dogs, cats, puppies, and kittens Cleansing, Drying, Non-Irritating I'm sure any ear cleaner that says it is drying will be as effective. Here's a link that has the 8 oz for $6.50. http://www.petvetdirect.com/home.asp?searchstr=Epi-Otic |
Any ear cleaner will do the trick, keep it clean and dry. You can also use the powder:) |
