Anal gland issues Anyone have experience with laser removal for anal glands? I understand recovery is considerably shorter than the 'old' type surgery, only about One week! Cost? My baby has to have hers expressed internally every three weeks, it causes her pain which I can't stand, & least important, getting expensive! 25 bucks a pop! I am looking for alternatives. |
Hi and welcome. I assume you've tried several different foods w/ different proteins and carb sources...before trying surgery...? |
I have no experience with the laser removal. However as someone who worked at a vet clinic for 15 years and a groomer for almost that long now i would highly advise against having anal glands removed unless its your very last option. It is painful and takes soooooooooo long to heal because of its location. Many dogs dont have full contol of their bowels for months and months after a surgery like that. And many regret that surgery. I would try different diets etc to firm up stools . Thats just my opinion obviously... Im sure their have been success stories as well :) |
Here is some info on anal gland diseases, treatment, and surgical removal. Surgical removal can damage sphincter control nerves, so it's a last resort. Concerned About Anal Sac Disease? | VCA Animal Hospitals |
We had a wheaten terrier who had a real issue with this- a wonderful pet store owner in town talked to me about diet and probiotics and enzymes. What an amazing turn around! Lucy ate a fishbased grain free food with added probiotics and NO treats (except green beans)or people food (I can't believe I had fed her ham!) and never had another problem with glands. |
Yes, I have heard about a product that has pumpkin powder& is supposed to help. Going to try that. She won't eat pumpkin, sweet potatoes, etc. |
Her feces are good & hard. She is just not able to express them herself very well. I am talking about the new surgery with laser. No blood loss, minimal pain.(well compared to the old way) comparable to to being spade. |
