Diva Presents a Delimma Our 7month old Yorkie has continued to amaze, delight and challenge us Once again we are facing a situation that has us scratching our heads. Our little girl has developed an occasional tendency to scratch the drywall off the walls of our house and eat it!!!!! It has happened 4 times. Has anyone out there had to deal with this problem? She seems to be happy and has everything she needs. We really need help with this. We cannot allow her to destroy our home. I would really hate to crate her all of the time. Right now she has the run of the house during the day and she is confined at night to an area at the end of a hall that leads to a half bath which is where we keep her papers. Please Help Diva's Mom . |
Ours chews on the floor boards. So we have been giving her Nylar bones flavored, this seems to help a lot. Good luck to ya Jeanne |
Is there any way there is a mouse in the wall? yorkies are real mice hunters and maybe she smells it. I don't know just grasoing at straws :aimeeyork |
Have you tried the Bitter Apple spray on the walls? It helped our Yoda to stop chewing on the wood furniture! :) |
lmao..... my golden retriever chewed a hole THROUGH TEH FLOOR.... good thing my dad is good with repairs |
Yorkies love to chew and once they have started on something it is hard to get them to stop. The bitter apple works well, but can get kinda expensive if you have a number of areas that they chew. I watched Dog Whsperers on Animal Planet and he said to get stick antipersperent(Sp) and put it where they chew, I went to the 99 cent store bought a clear stick type, put it where the dogs were chewing and they have never gone near it again. Same thing with hairspray, a light dusting of hairspray will work. The pups were "dining" on occasion in the cats litter box, placed papers around litter box, sprayed with hair spray and they won't go near it, does not seem to bother the cat. They sell a stick called "Stay Away" stick at petco for $10 and if you check the ingredients are the same as the stick antipersperent (sp). |
Milliecorrales Are you talking like deodorant? Like a anti-perspirant, deodorant? Any brand of roll on will do? Hmm, if so, I will try it, my little one chews on the corner of the sofa, baseboards, etc. I always have hair spray around, maybe I will try that too if I get a confirmation from you that this is what you use. |
Thanks for all of your help Thanks for all of your help. I really do appreciate you taking the time to offer your thoughts and suggestions. I will try the suggestion about using the anti-perspirant. We have used "Bitter Apple" with some success. The problem is trying to figure out which wall she will attack next.(smile) No, I don't think that there is a mouse in the wall. :) I was wondering if there was something missing from her diet. We are planning on traveling by car with Diva this summer. Do any of you have any suggestions for us. I would love to hear about your adventures. Thanks again. Diva's Mom |
Bodhi has recently found where every corner bead has buckled and has cracked paint. As he finds them, I cover them with clear box tape. Sometimes I even find them first, ha ha! He did manage to really get into one corner. So much that I was concerned enough to call the Poison Control. **TIP: Keep this number near each phone for your sweethearts! I was asked the age of the paint (3 years), age and weight of Bodhi. I know enough that lead isn't an issue, but was told that the paint is non-toxic. Big relief there! No signs of upset belly that evening, thank goodness! That's really interesting about the Petco stick vs. anti-perspirant. |
I have so many chewed corners and torn wallpaper I can't count. ;) I just keep extra wallpaper on hand for repair. I figure it comes with the territory of raising puppies. Walls are not really good for them to eat though. I found that putting Tabasco sauce on the favorite chew spot worked most of the time. The smell alone deters most of the pups. Once in a while though one will like it. LOL |
Help,Diva is at it again !!! Well, Here I am again. Diva has once again scratched the paint off and dug into the dry wall in our family room. This is not the same wall that she damaged before!! Every time she does this (5 times) it is always a different wall and we are at our wits end. Today it happened so fast that it was truly amazing. I thought that I was seeing things when I walked into the room and saw the hole in the wall. My husband and I are very discouraged. She has been doing so well otherwise. The weather here in Ohio has been great, we have been going outside alot and she has been enjoying the outdoors as much as we have. We were looking forward to traveling with her and having a wonderful summer with our Diva but I really don't know if we will be able to keep her if her tendency to dig into the walls continue. Maybe I am writing too soon after this happened. I hope that after my hurt and confusion subsides, I will think differently. I love my dog very much but I feel as though I can't control this tendency that she has. I don't think that I could keep her crated all day, everyday. She has had the run of the house since we have had her. The only times that she is confined is at night and when we have to leave her at home alone and this is not a confinement to a crate but rather to an area off the kitchen which leads to our half bath. Please, if there is someone who is out there that can help me understand this behavior and how to change or avoid it please let me know. If I have to part from my puppy I will be very, very, very sad. Thanks for all of your help. I think that this is a wonderful forum and the Yorkie Talkers are fantastic. Diva's Mom |
Crate: For those who think the home is a chew toy. 1 Attachment(s) This is our solution. Wire crates. $14 from Fred Meyer here in Seattle. Pardon the mess. You'll see the box in the upper right. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/att...tid=3343&stc=1 Started with one set. Currently own 4. Even have them going around bed. Use nylon lockties to be able to block areas temporarily. Like sorting laundry on floor. We connect 2 with the connectors and locktie panels on the end. We'll fold them and take them with us when we visit other homes. Let 2 sections overlap in the middle where they don't equal the size of the wall. That way they can still be moved around as needed. Cavy owners get VERY creative with these! I even have a play area outside our patio door with the panels on the top like a large crate. May have to connect them 2 panels high if she'll jump/climb over. I'm so sorry you're having this problem! Good luck and let us know how it goes! |
THANKS TO ALL OF YOU. I have received many great ideas, suggestions and words of encouragement. I will let everyone know what happens. Diva's Mom |

chewing She is only 7 months, so that is one reason she is chewing. Never allow her to be alone in a room and pen her up when you aren't there to correct her when she does it. Get a 2x3 pen. Good luck |
