Any suggestions with pills I haven't been here in awhile so I'll give a little background. I have a little girl that I rescued from a horrible pet store, she was in terrible condition and I knew she was in trouble. Long story short, she was born with both hind legs out of socket, femurs had to be shaved, she lost one hind leg and now is my three legged wonder. She suffers especially when the weather is bad with arthritis like I do so she is on tramadol but I have a horrible time giving it to her. I've tried everything from melting it, cream cheese, peanut butter, pill pockets to hot dogs. As soon as the pill touches her tongue she foams and creates slime. Once we get it down her it helps her tremendously, it's just getting it down her. Does anyone have any suggestions or ideas? |
Tramadol is a terrible tasting pill. If you can't hide it in something she likes, I would have your vet call in a prescription to a compounding pharmacy. They can make any size dose into either a flavored liquid or a chewable flavored tablet. Mine like it liver flavored. If you don't have a local compounding pharmacy your vet can contact Diamondback Drugs in Scottsdale, Arizona. Diamondback Drugs - Veterinary Pharmacy and Pet Medications They are a large compounding pharmacy for animal medications and ship worldwide. Their prices are reasonable, their shipping is also quick and reasonable. They can compound just about any medication into appropriate doses and flavors dogs like. If Tramadol is a medication your dog takes regularly, it is definitely worth it. Diana |
To add to my previous post, I have three toy breed dogs. I always keep metronidazole and tramadol on hand in compounded chewable tablets so that I don't have to wait if one of my dogs need them. Metronidazole tastes awful too. Diana |

I had another suggestion, but THIS is the way to go, so I will suggest this be the route you take! I have put this in my "dog meds/dosing" folder, in case I ever need it!! |
I was gonna say pill gun, but I like Diana's idea much better! And LOL at the foam and slime up remark. Oh how I know that. |

Thank you. I have sent them a request with the info off the prescription bottle and hopefully they will get back with me. There is a refill on the bottle that I have, I try not to give it to her daily but I know she's suffering with the horrible weather we've had this year. |
Issidell, your vet may have to make the first contact with them. If you don't hear anything by tomorrow, I would have your vet either call or just fax in a prescription. Diana |
We used the compounding route in the past, but as I recall for one of the meds we had to use an in-state facility, as it could not be shipped across state lines. |
