Coconut Oil My Junebug turned 5 and is in pristine health. He has had a history of seizures but not enough to be on medication. He has maybe one every 6 months or so but when they occur, it is still heart-wrenching. I was told about coconut oil in paste form and all of the benefits that come along with it. I was also told that dog foods can have some effects on seizures. I feed Pure Balance Small Breed Chicken & Brown Rice. This dog food is rated pretty high by dogfoodadvisor.com and this food contains no corn, wheat or soy. JB sometimes snubs his nose up in the air at the food, but, I always have some free samples on hand to mix in and it does the trick. I DO NOT feed him any wet (even as a topper) because he then always ends up with loose stools and even diarrhea. I was advised by a Biewer breeder (who I also consider a friend) to add coconut oil to his diet. The only concern I have with the coconut oil is that I have heard it can cause diarrhea and flu-like symptoms. Also that I can feed up to 1 tsp. per day but I am leery of feeding that much. For every 10lbs of weight 1 tsp is standard (unless I read it incorrectly). Looking for some advice on how to introduce coconut oil (paste form) to my dogs diet and hopefully he does not get sick when it is suppose to be beneficial. Thanks! |
Believe it or not, I give my Biewers a 1/4 tsp. Straight off the spoon. Some breeders melt the coconut oil and pour it on the kibble. |
I found out my little guy loved coconut oil when I was using it for very dry skin on my hands. He would NOT stop licking my hands. Especially in a pup with a very sensitive stomach, any diet change can cause diarrhea, so start out very slow and gradually increase the amount as tolerated. A lick or so off the tip of your finger is enough to start. If you don't see any negative change in his bowel movements after several days, you can gradually increase the amount a tiny bit at a time as long as he's tolerating the increases. I have a teapot yorkie that weighs nearly 15 pounds and he gets about 1/2 tsp every other day or so. He will lick it right off the tip of my finger. Its one of his favorite treats. Diana |

I have been doing some research on the best brands possible to purchase but I am having a hard time trying to find them. A couple of considerations in purchasing a good coconut oil is that it is Virgin (unrefined), cold-pressed, organic and should be (but not necessarily) in a glass jar. Your thoughts on what you use and anyone else out there would be helpful! |
What is the coconut-oil/paste used for? My Sassy has seizures. And takes medicine. She also has bouts of colitis. |

Coconut Oil Thanks Diana for the the site information. Please excuse me, but what is the benefit of giving this to our babies? All this is very new to me. |
I use coconut oil for myself. Everyday when I use it I rub some on Ruger's paws. Oh yes, he licks it off but he still has very soft feet. I also buy the extra virgin cold compressed oil in a jar. I buy mine @ a health food store. Try it he will love it, in small amounts. |
