New Puppy/Will not eat!! Looking for any suggestions in trying to get our 10 week old Yorkie to eat. When we brought him home two weeks ago we were syringe feeding him chicken & gravy baby food. He ate this well for a couple days and then started turning his head and refusing it. His sugar dropped the other night because of not eating and we ended up in the emergency vet. We have been giving him Karo syrup or honey to try to keep it regulated, but it crashed. After the emergency vet episode the vet was able to get him to eat gerber baby turkey sticks. He was doing great eating these for the last couple of days, but now is turning his nose up to them. Before the sugar episode the vet suggested we go to pet smart and by 10 different foods (soft and hard), make them all available and see which enticed him. He ate two different soft foods and we thought we hit the jackpot, but it didn't last. Looking for any help or suggestions. We have seemed to have tried everything and I am thinking that he is just picky. We have tried hard kibble of all kinds, softening kibble in chicken broth, chicken, soft food, etc. Thank you in advance!!! |
Lola loves Cesar food |
Have you contacted the breeder yet? This little one sounds like they were too young when they left mom, and now they are in danger. I would definitely call the breeder. |
Yes call the breeder. Sounds like you got the baby @ 8 weeks? That's young to be in the real world without mommy. The breeder should be willing to help. |
We have tried the Cesar, which he ate once but then had no future interest. We agree that he shouldn't have left his mother so soon....but what are you gonna do now, except love him and work through this. Thanks for the comments. |
We have called them, but they have been no help. We have tried the couple things they have suggested like chicken and yogurt. Neither have worked. Thank you! |
My puppy was to young to leave her momma as well. I had to hand feed her. My vet switched her to prescription puppy food (royal canine) after a week...she was then 8 weeks old. Try grinding up the dry dog food to make it smaller. Try adding a tiny bit of water. Sprinkle a "tiny" bit of parmesan chez on her food. Also....try different sizes of bowls...sounds weird but my baby wanted a big bowl not a tiny one. Always involve your vet if your baby isn't eating. Xxoo |
Prince Charming ate i/d canned (with water and Kayro added due to dryness) and kibble. We ended up leaving the kibble down 24/7 -- I had a bowl of it on the foot of my bed for 16.5 years so he would be able to "snibble" whenever he felt the need. Canned was served 2x daily. Then we went to RAW and i/d kibble. Never had a problem after we started the RAW. Most likeky he also misses his brothers and sisters. We have never been a single pet home so they always have a friend to keep them company. Prince Charming was only 6 weeks but the breeder was taking them to the pound the next day to have the rest destroyed. Could only save one but called the pound and they said to call Humane Society and talk to the Officer to stop them from being destroyed -- Yorkies will go fast! When I called they already had 3 other complaints; went and seized all the dogs - parents included. |
Puppy Thank you for saving this poor young baby. Praying the others found good homes as well. Glad to know he is eating well now and hope he continues to eat and thrive. (Had to laugh at the typo with the kibble left at the foot of the bed for 16.5 years, should be pretty tasty by then!) |
"snibble" Quote:
He was a sweetheart and my special baby. |
Typo:) Thanks for the explanation of snibble, a very cute one! Kind of descriptive too. As for the 16.5 years, I really got it wrong. :( I see now that you had been doing this every day for 16.5 years, whereas I thought you put the kibble down for 16.5 hours (typo?) each day! Sorry about my misinterpretation. |
Has the vet ran a blood panel on your pup to make sure the pup does not have a liver shunt? What shots has your pup had? Sometimes over vaccination will cause problems. Using to much karo and honey could lead to serious problems also. I do not recommend honey at all for a young pup. How much does this pup weigh? Some pups prefer ground up dry puppy instead of a wet food. Get a good quality dry puppy food and grind it a bit in a blender and leave a bowl out for the puppy to munch on. I pray your baby starts eating and showing improvement. |
Food issues Hi there I have had great success with raw freeze dried food! It never goes bad and my little one loves to toss the bits into the air to simulate attacking and hunting, she prefers the chicken, but you can find beef, salmon, duck and turkey! Pickie eaters seem to love it! But it is on the expensive side about 30.00 for a bag! Lasts about a week. Regards Ruth |
Hi there, I would recommend giving the pup Nutrical a few times per day and you may want to add Dyne to any food you can get him to eat. You can also syringe the Dyne into his mouth. I have heard that some have had success with wet kitty food. Green tripe is something that I have been told dogs/puppies eat readily. You can sometimes find canned green tripe at Petco or Petsmart. Freshpet is another food that pups seems to love. It is available in the cold section at Petco/Petsmart and also available in the dog section at most Walmart stores in a fridge. Wishing you much luck with your puppy! ________________ Autumn & Ella's Momma Biewer Puppies for Sale | Biewer Yorkshire Terriers | Biewer Yorkshire Terrier Breeder |Yorkie Puppies for Sale |
