Need some advice...not drinking. Ok guys so Gizmo is 9 weeks now and I know he is young but he was a rescue situation. We have him on formula because the vet said he was tiny and still needed it as well as royal canine puppy and nursing mom wet food. We have been getting water in him with a syringe because he won't drink it out of the bowl. He fights us all the way when we use the syringe. Any tips? I'm worried he isn't getting enough. We go back to vet next week but don't want to wait that long for advice. Help fellow moms and dads. |
Any liquid will work....you dont need to worry about WATER if baby is getting formula. The formula I use has everything a baby needs in it.... 1 8oz can Just Born puppy formula 4 oz Pedialyte unflavored 1 raw egg yolk 1/2 cup live cultured yogurt 3 tbsp Dr Millers NutraDrops Is baby bottle feeding well? If a baby aspirates and get formula in the lungs, that will more than likely cause pneumonia and he will not recover. Aspiration is a big concern if you are having to use a dropper or something like that...you do better dipping the corner of a washcloth in the formula and let baby suck the milk out of the cloth....hopefully, this baby is drinking well from a bottle and this is not an issue. You can mix formula or water into the puppy food, if he is eating that up....that will be enough fluid for him, as long as he is eating that mushy formula....would be safer than trying to give liquids and getting it into his lungs....it is all over but the hole digging if that happens. The yogurt in that formula I gave you above, is needed for intestinal flora so baby wont get diarrhea and get a "slick gut", which can lead to a whole set of problems and issues..... That RC puppy food is great for him....I would just add some of that formula I gave above, to get fluid into baby....is baby eating that puppy food on his own from a saucer? Please keep us updated on this tiny soul.... |
Thank you so very much for the info. I was starting to worry. He is taking the formula very well. I didn't know about the yogurt. How would I give this to him? Any specific type brand? Id like to make sure he gets whats needed for him. So far he hasn't had a firm stool I just assumed from all the liquid/soft foods he was having to consume. Should of considered that. He licks the formula out of a little bowl now as of today. The vet said he would like to see him learn to eat/drink this way instead of counting on a bottle or nipple. It's so adorable though (at least to me ha-ha) he crawls up my shoulder and has found out my ear lobe reminds him of a nipple ha-ha. Again thanks for the input. I appreciate it. It's all very much appreciated and needed. |
You put the yogurt into the rest of the ingredients and mix that all up well. You want just a plain yogurt with live cultures...no diet yogurt....no artificial sweetners........mix the stuff together above and pour it into a saucer and let him lap it up!....pour it into a saucer and he will drink it! Vet is right...if he is drinking from a saucer, you are way ahead in the game!!! |
Welcome to YT -- you've gotten some great advice from Yorkiemom1! :) |
Thanks so much for the info. He is doing so well i want him to keep it up. Other then potty training he is such a smart little guy. Thanks for the welcome. I love this site. Everyone is so welcoming. |
Surprise = Quote:
I now recommend the new "puppy potty system" (found on the web) as that allows the dogs to stay indoors when we are not able to go out or are gone to work or the day is so bad we don't want out babies out there. I baby sat a puppy and they brought the system so he would not get con-fuzzed. :confused: WELL that little guy never had a problem. The owner showed him where his crate was and he went in it every time. Of course I'm teaching all 3 cats to use the toilet (litter kwitter system ONLY also found on the web). NOTHING but the best for my fur-kiddos. :D What we humans will do for our children - fur kids included of course. |
Absolutely ha-ha I agree with that. We had a Boston terrier for 12 years before she passed away and lord knows we spoiled her like crazy. I'm sure this little guy will be no different because we are all already gushing over him. |
