WILL SOMEONE TELL ME PLEASE??Is This A Normal Thing For A Yorkie To Do?? My Two Yorkies Do A Sort Of Hack/cough Sort Of Thing. My Boy Does It More Often It Only Lasts For A Couple Of Minutes Sometimes Not Even That Long. Its Almost As If He Cant Get Enough Air I Know That Sounds Terrible But That Is What It Sounds Like. I Usually Rub His Throat In An Up And Down Motion To Relax His Throat And That Usually Helps. Is This Normal??? Should I Be Concerned?? |
Have your pups been to the groomers, a kennel, etc. lately? How old are they and how long have you had them? Just wondering if this is kennel cough. |
cartersmom is right thats what it sounds like to me |

Otis does that when he plays too hard, or if he accidentally hits his nose or throat. My mom's Yorkie constantly did that. He would make rhinocerus honking sounds, amost like an asthma attack, but he was never in any danger. In fact, he's like a million years old now. |
heres a little thing on reverce sneezing brownie does it when him and kayko are playing This is a misnomer, for it has nothing to do with actual sneezing. However, it is a popular term for something that appears to be worse than it actually is. When this occurs, your dog will appear to be snorting or choking. The posture will be one of the neck extended with the chest expanded, as the dog struggles to take in air. The actual physiology is that the trachea has narrowed and the normal amount of air is not able to enter the lungs. The triggering mechanisms are usually excitement or stress. If this is happening to your dog, do not panic. You can help your dog by soothingly stroking the upper throat area to encourage relaxation and dilation of the trachea. If things do not resolve soon, and the dog is really having a continued hard time, you can try depressing the tongue to open up the oral cavity for the passage of much needed air into the lungs. The predisposition to this is thought to be hereditary, particularly in smaller breeds because of the decreased diameter of their tracheas. If your dog occasionally has this, do not worry that you need to be there to help each time it happens. A dog is able to come out of an attack of reverse sneezing without help and will not suffer permanent damage. Contributed by Barbara Moore's Veterinarian |
Fozzy does this too. I am relieved that other Yorkies do this as well and this does not appear to be a serious problem. Fozzy has done this snort/sneeze/thingy ever since we had him and he was given the Kennel Cough Vaccine real early because we took him to puppy socialization sessions. Thanks for the info. |

I read a book that said Yorkies do this when they play, so I have not concerned myself with it. But if it's excessive, I think you should get Kody checked out, just to be safe. |
I agree with the above post from Mymason......Duke does the same thing after he has been running around chasing birds or cats out of our backyard. :p |
honks and snorts I have 3 yorkies and they all honk and snort and all have runny eyes and buggers. I use babywipes to wash theur face every morning |

I love your dog's name! I too am relieved since I did a search on this to see if it was the norm. My boy got the kennel cough vaccine early too so I didn't think that's what it was...mine does it once or twice a day but last just a few seconds. Glad to know it's not a real problem! |
The following site discusses reverse sneezing and collapsed tracheas. Hope it helps to explain it somewhat. http://www.malteseonly.com/trachea.html |
Chloe sometimes hacks (reminds me of Felix Unger on the "Odd Couple" if you ever saw that show) She doesn't seem to be distressed by it and it seems to come and go withoug any warning (although sometimes it is more apparent in the bath when she is upset). I usually don't do anything, and it stops by itself. Thanks for the advice and website on collapsed tracheas-better to be safe (and well-informed) than sorry! |
Leader Baxter does this when he gets excited or when he pulls on his leash. We just started a training class, and they suggested the Gentle Leader for dogs who pull. Let me tell you, this is the BEST thing that ever happened! Baxter was kind of an exception-all the other dogs threw a fit. Baxter let us put this on him and he now walks PERFECT. NO MORE PULLING! This happened IMMEDIATELY. No more pulling and no more honking! |
My Christy does this a couple times a day starting a few weeks ago when we started leaving the airconditioner on. I was worried but it sounds like this is quite normal. Thanks for all your help. |
