Natural Balance food Ok so I recently switched my babies food from Royal Canin to Natural Balance sweet potato and fish. He LOVES it (but then again he loves and will eat anything lol). I had no problems switching him directly to it but now I notice that his poop smells worse than usual and his skin/ coat also smells bad. Has anyone else had this problem with Natural Balance? |
I use Natural Balance Duck and Potato and my dogs love it. I have heard that fish can have a smell to it. It might be that. |
I was advised not to get the duck flavor because it's similar to chicken which is most likely what he is allergic to. But I can't stand the smell. Its only been a couple days so maybe it will get better as he gets used to it...I hope. |

Bambina is on Duck and Potato, no smell...i'm sure its the fish... |
Cody was on NB, Sweet Potato & venison, Sweet Potato & Bison, Sweet Potato & chicken, Potato & Rabbit over a period of 18 months, there was no body odor, I have to go along with the other members and say it's the fish smell permeating through the skin pores. |
We sell NB at my work and Lilah is currently on duck and potato, my mothers maltese is on sweet pot and chicken- the reps even comment that the fish is such a smell issue that it causes its popularity to fluctuate. Definitely the fish. Most dogs with chicken allergies don't have issues with duck to the best of my knowledge though some foods that are 'fowl' focused or say they are duck will include chicken as a bulk part of their protein source. Natural balance primarily is a limited ingredient line and has single protein only. Often in brands that are no chicken for the protein they will use chicken fat as the fat source- although the fat does not include the protein piece that incites allergic reactions to those with a sensitivity to proteins it at the very least is confusing and NB avoids that too to keep the lines clear. Eww to smelly fish problem. I'm sorry to hear that and would just try a different flavor. |

That could be it too...I hope. I was planning to keep him on this food for at least a couple weeks anyway and see if it gets better. He loves it and I've heard that fish is good for them. (although I don't eat fish..yuk...I want what's best for him) |
I couldn't take it anymore! Lol I had to exchange the food. I can't take the smell. I got him lamb and rice....let's see how that works. Does anyone else use this flavor? (duck seems to be more popular but I'm kind of leery with it also being a fowl protein) |
I was going to try the Fish next you have me deciding not to now because of the smell. I think I am going to go with the Venison or Rabbit next. |

It is a limited ingredient food. I stuck with Natural Balance because of that. It has only been 2 days but the smell from the fish flavor is already gone. Thank God! But....I did notice a lot of scratching this morning. Not sure if it is because of the grain or just from the being switched 2x in the past week....maybe he just needs time to adjust, I hope. We will see how the next couple of days go. |
