Strange behavior at mealtime-???? My 13 yr old 3 lb Yorkie has always had a great appetite. Several months ago she started to be reluctant around her food bowl. I changed her bowl thinking it must have something to do with it, no change. She would eventually eat and finish every bite. In the last couple of weeks she started not even approaching her food. Usually a little NutriCal would jump start her appetite, but that's starting not to work. She's on Royal Canin with some added turkey, cottage cheese and rice. Lately she doesn't really want her treats-sliced low sodium turkey. Otherwise everything is normal. With my 15yr old Yorkie that died 2yrs ago, this kind of behavior was the beginning of the end. So I'm heart sick already. I keep my feelings in check and don't make a big deal of this not eating, but I'm worried. Vet appt with blood work in September-all normal. Any thoughts appreciated. |

Hi, I would definitely take her for a vet visit to see if something underlying has cropped up since September. It is worrisome when they are not eating right, have you tried sprinkling Parmesan cheese on her food to see if that will entice her to eat? I've read that tip on here several times. I do pray it's just a fluke and she will be back to normal quickly. I do not want to worry you but I had a 15 ur old Maltese and that was the beginning of the end for him as well. BUT he was my little old senile, blind man, that was no longer interested in anything but sleeping. Without a doubt I would be at the vet to get her checked, it could be a simple fix that could ease your mind. Prayers are with you and your sweet baby! |

I agree with Cindy that a return trip to the vet is needed. Sending best wishes for your little girl. |

Thank you, Cindy and Maximo. And I'll try and he Parmesan. We will be at the vet this afternoon. |

Food So sorry your sweet baby is off her food. As this is abnormal for her there may be some medical underlying cause for this. Things like kidney disease and pancreatitis for example can come on quickly, especially as they get older. Praying the vet visit brings good news and that she is just going through a picky patch. Good luck and please let us know what the vet says. I am so sorry you lost your previous baby, and I can see how concerned you are now. |

Thank you. Our vet not in the office until Monday.. I'm going to collect a urine sample to bring with her. She ate well today. I getting her out more and taking her with me in the car when I go out to stimulate her a little. Everyone is so helpful and understanding many thanks, |

Yay on her eating well today!! That is really good, and I'm sure it relieved you too! Maybe she has been just under the weather so to speak and is coming out of it. Yorkie tummies can be sensitive at times, still praying it's nothing and over and done with. I'm sure the vets visit on Monday will help shed some light. I bet she had fun on her car ride today. Please keep us posted! :) |

Thanks Cindy. Should have her labs today. |

Thanks to everyone who responded. Jaya has been on Flagyl for 2 days and is eating, barking at squirrels, and standing next to the refrigerator waiting for treats. What a relief! 13 years old, 3 lbs, not eating is a scary thing. Vet said she had not lost weight despite the hunger strike. Thanks again. |
