Bad Breath This may be a stupid question but how do you tell if your dog has bad breath or it is a dog smell? Boomer's breath up close when he tries to kiss me or breathes heavily has a smell to it. Not horrible but definitely not pleasing. I only smell it when he is in my face and it usually make me not want him to kiss me. I have only noticed it the past week or so. I'm not too concerned but I really don't know what I should be looking for. He was just seen by the vet who did not recommend any dental cleanings. He just advised to keep brushing their teeth daily. Boomer does have some tartar on his teeth but the Vet didn't seem to worried about it. His gums are not bleeding and he doesn't seem to be in any pain. The vet did blood work while I was there and it was all normal (cbc and chem lab) Additionally, he is on Temporal P (spelling off) 1/2 a tablet every other day. Could that be causing the smell? |
Correction - since I can't figure out to edit my original post... after brushing Boomer's teeth this evening he did have some slight bleeding. I think I am going to call the Humane Society tomorrow and ask about their dental cleaning fees and consultation. Has anyone gone to them for cleanings or vet care? I know they give discounted prices but it can take a while to get in to see them. I don't think it is an emergency but I believe he may need a cleaning. |
If it smells bad, there is probably something going on, even if minor. Better to take care of it when it's still minor. |
When Bella had bad breath, Arm and Hammer Dental Water Additive cleared it up quickly. You can get it at Petsmart or online. |

9 times out of 10 bad breath means dental issues. (IE cleaning needed, something stuck in teeth etc) but that 1 occasional time it could also mean some sort of intestinal upset. Has he been eating/drinking/pottying ok? Acting normal? |
Thanks all. I called the Humane Society (the one on 59th Street) They quoted me $150 for the teeth cleaning but first I need to see the vet and get blood work done. Which are all additional costs. I have a follow up with my vet in a couple weeks so I will ask him about teeth cleaning and his opinion. When he saw Boomer a few weeks ago he didn't mention it just said to brush their teeth regularly at home. I have a bad sense of smell so it may be nothing. Right now I bought an additive to put in their water to help with bad breath. Since the Humane Society is cheaper than most vets I wouldn't be able to get Boomer in for a cleaning until Christmas/January. That is why I am waiting to book an appt until I see my regular vet. Also the Humane Society makes you pre-pay for all services and will not give any refunds or reschedule any appts. He is eating/drinking/pooping regularly. Actually even better since I switched him to grain-free diet. Thanks all for the advice. Hopefully it is just my bad sense of smell and not an issue. I will see what the vet suggests. |
