General question about eyes So, I have a question about eyes. My Moka's eyes just seem weird. You know when the light shines on them they glow? Well, I know some of that is normal, but Moka's really glow all the time, compared to Mylee's eyes. And since their eyes are dark it's really hard to see their pupils, but, if I study them, I can see Mylee's bluish colored pupils in regular light, but I never can make out Moka's pupils. Does that mean they are always dilated? When light shines on her it looks like you can see right through her glowing eyes. Is this something to be concerned about? She was recently at the vet for a checkup and she's recently recovered from a ulcer on her eye so it's not like she hasn't seen the vet and he has never said anything. But she is beginning to age (9) and I'm just worried she may be showing some signs of age. And I wouldn't worry, except that her aggression is worsening and others have commented. Something's not right with my girl and I just can't pinpoint it. |
I wish I knew more about eye flash. I feel like there was an article here...not terribly long ago, about this very subject and what certain eye-flash colors could mean. Hmmm....need to see if I can recall it more. You don't see, for example, what could be a cataract starting do you...? It'd be more opaque looking and whitish... |
Shelly, the only thing I can recommend is to see an ophthalmologist. My first thought would be cataracts forming and I would think a regular vet would be able to notice that. Hoping it is only an age related ailment and nothing to be concerned about. Paw shakes from her one time Valentine Bentley. Still have her pink heart shaped message on my refrigerator! :) |
Thank you both. Her eyes are crystal clear. No cloudiness, no drainage, etc. I just got to thinking the other day that I can see Mylee's pupils, and my dd has a blue eyed aussie, and of course, I can always see her pupils. But I never can make out Moka's actual pupils. And when taking photos or when light hits them, it's the pupils that glow, right? If that is the case, then Moka's pupils are always large/dilated. I recently had her to the vet for every test I could think of and a very thorough well check. I'd sure hope my vet would detect cataracts. Not a specialty clinic, but way more advanced than most. |
Good question. I have noticed in photos of some very senior Yorkies that their eye shine seems rather opaque, and I wondered if this was just a natural part of aging. To see my boys' pupils, I have to put them on the counter in good light to distinguish the black pupil from the dark brown iris. Underneath the direct light, I can see the pupil dilate and grow smaller depending on which direction their eyes are in relationship to the overhead can light. At your girls' next vet visit, you can ask your vet to take a look. I don't know the proper name for the exam, but they turn out the lights and use a magnifying tool that shines a bright light into the eye so that the doctor can see the retina and interior structures. |
Cataracts usually start around age 8 and they like a blue circle |
