Abused 5yr old Yorkie I need HELP I just got my Yorkie and she was Neglected badly by her previous owner and i need any suggestions on some of her bigger issues. Just a FYI I will be taking her to the vet for a full exam next week but for the time being I need your advice as i dont know much about Yorkie Care. She does not sleep through the night at least twice she gets up. She does not know how to properly use a puppy pad at night she misses and gets pee and poop on the floor. She has bad skin with tons of dandruff/ big flakes and I have been combing her daily; she came with a medicated shampoo, she has a LOT of hair loss and her hair is slow growing back. Teeth have Plaque on them and I think she is missing some or is in pain she does not let me touch her mouth. She is overweight I weighed her at 12 lbs she wont eat crunchy food - teeth issue I give her wet food instead. HELP I love her and just want her back to full health! :animal-pa:animal-pa:animal-pa |

New Yorkie First thank you for adopting this girl and doing all you can to give her a healthy and loved life. You are taking care of the medical issues by taking her to the vet, and I am sure she will need a dental procedure to help her poor teeth and mouth. She will take some time to adapt to her new and caring home and could wake up in the night as she is scared in unfamiliar territory. She may not have been potty trained as you suggest and that is why she is not using the pads properly. She will learn in time with your help in training. Perhaps you could change her eating/drinking schedules so that she does not need to / 'go' at night? She also may have a urinary tract infection that makes her need to pee in the night? But I hope that is not the case. If it is, a UTI is easily cured with meds:) Having adopted dogs myself, I do know that it takes time to get them comfortable in their new home and to get the health needs taken care of. Good luck at the vet and I hope your baby gets well and adapted soon. |

So sweet You are already in love with this little girl:). It doesn't take much time to do that with these little ones. Sounded like your new girl desperately needed YOU. She will adjust because she feels comforted and loved by you and that can go a very long way. With grooming and nurturing her physical along with her emotional she will begin to Heal and change. Then she isn't going to want you out of her sight. Can't wait to see how much she changes in your care. Btw what's your new girls name?:) |
Bless your heart for taking in this precious girl. First and foremost, you need to get her to the vet ASAP - get her teeth checked and get a full blood panel, and perhaps a urinalysis too in case she has a UTI. She will likely need to be put under in the very near future for a dental, which I'd do asap. How old is she? I have to wonder what the fur loss is from too - could be hypothyroid, malnutrition, Cushings, stress....hard to say. |
Thank you everyone, I will definitely get the book because I need it. Lina is doing better adjusting to us, she didn't use the bathroom in the house last night. She is adjusting to going outside and oink a routine schedule of eating twice a day not all day long. I'm training her slowly and I can already see she is eager to please. I will give an update after the vet visit. |
What great news, yorkies are very smart but can be a bit stubborn at times, what ever you are doing keep it up, it's working. Sweet little girl, I am so happy she has found someone that cares about her well being and loves her. Bless you. |

Bless you for taking in this poor baby girl. Sounds as if you are doing a great job taking care of her & that you want only the best for her. My boy had hair & teeth issues when I adopted him 2 years ago also but with a change in his diet (Blue Buffalo) & grooming (personally & with my groomer) he is doing great. Welcome to YT ! :) Thank You for taking in this poor little angel, you will fall fast & hard for her. Just a couple of things, if you are putting her on a diet you must do it slowly or you can damage organs. Also I recommend a harness rather then a collar for walks so as not to damage her trachea. If she's on the larger side the puppy pads might be too small for her & she's just not able to get all of the way onto it or not realizing she's not on it. |
Lucky girl to have landed in your home! :) When you go to the vet, I am sure he/she will suggest blood work. Please get this done because it will give clues as to whether or not there are any health issues. It is also good to have a baseline. You also need it anyway to test for heartworms and also before putting her under anesthesia for that much needed dental. Looking forward to getting to know her and you ~ welcome to YT! |

update on Lina Well My Lina girl is coming along well! I have been grooming her everyday and gotten her coat to grow back its a slow process. Bathing her every other day with her medicated shampoo, I've changed her food and we go on daily 30 min walks. A funny story yesterday we went by some stables to look at the horses ( I adore horses) well My baby girl thought she could get under the fence and run with the Horses she was frantic to get in to the corral with the Horses, so much so that she made her self throw-up. I picked her up and she was even more frantic I could not believe how hyper and excited she was. Also, I had not heard her bark at all ( not that its bad either) but I wanted to hear it, this morning I was getting ready for work and not paying her spinning any attention and she tried to jump on the couch without success and she then barked at me it was a low muffled bark the cutest thing ever! My hubby and I take her everywhere we never leave her in a crate or kennel and she absolutely adores being outside, We laugh at her behavior sometimes she has such a big personality! :aimeeyork:):animal-pa :thumbs up |
