Glucosamine & excessive tears I recently started giving Miki a glucosamine supplement to help with her luxating patella, & have noticed that all of a sudden she is getting excessive tearing from her eyes. The tearing is matting up & creating a problem that is bothering her (& me:eek:), even though I have tried to stay on top of it by cleaning her eyes often. I am unsure if I should try another brand of glucosamine as I would like to avoid surgery for her luxating patella. Has anyone else experienced this type of problem? By the way, I have been giving her the Gerber water to help prevent eye tearing (which I first learned about on YorkieTalk.com:thumbup:) for probably 3 years & it has always helped until now. Any suggestions? |
What brand are you giving her? |
VETIQ Hip & Joint brand. |
I would talk to your vet about this symptom as glucosamine comes from shellfish & she may be having an allergic reaction from it. Any new symptom your pup has after starting a new med or supplement should always be discussed with your vet. Talk to your vet about (Ester-C) as it is very safe for dogs And cats & helps greatly with the same issues as what you are using. I had a vet tell me about the (Ester-C) yrs ago & have used it on several dogs & cats since with no problems or side effects. I buy mine at Walmart in the 500mg & 1/4 them for my small dogs & cats. |
Thank you lillymae! Is the Ester-C you are referring to found in the section for humans, or in the pet section? I will contact my Vet about this before purchasing any. Miki IS allergic to beef, so she could very well be allergic to the shellfish in glucosimine as well. I appreciate your input, & will be contacting my Vet on Monday. |
Many vets including ortho surgeons don't buy into the whole glucosamine thing. I would skip it and instead use omega 3 fatty acids to help reduce inflammation. I use salmon oil - 1/2 tsp on their food. All my dogs are 6-10 lbs. |
PS I would stop wasting $ on water. Tap water is fine and if you want to, buy a $20 Brita pitcher and filter it. We drink city water here and no one has runny eyes. The fish oils may help with that also. |

This is very interesting , thank you .. Do you think the Omega 3 would help a dog with Arthritis ? My Airedale has joint pain from arthritis and the glucosamine does not seem to help much .. |

Thanks for all the input on my question about the glucosamine. It gives me more questions to ask the Vet about other options. I do have to say though that the Gerber Water does make a difference for Miki. It's very inexpensive, .89 a gallon which lasts quite a while as Miki is just under 5 lbs. I recently told a friend of mine about it for her little one & she noticed a difference with the tearing right away. :aimeeyork So I will stick with that. :) |
