Yorkie aged 6 years
 

OK - here is the confession our Millie is 6 years old. We rescued her at 8 months told she was a JR cross but soon saw this Yorkie develop who has so much love to give and wants to please. (She may have some JR in her but we love her.) She has been hard work but has given us more back.

She has lovely teeth and this morning she was laying next to me and I noticed on her back tooth (molar?) like another small flap of bone siting over the top and it moves slightly. I checked the other side and that looks almost the same.

I can immediately rush to the vet and get my £65 bill to open his door but I would be interested to know what any of you think this is? Is it left from baby teeth at 6 years of age? Will it work it's way out? She has a chew every evening and doesn't let me forget it is time! So she has no problem eating!

We have only had border terriers before and never had a little dog like this well she isn't that little but loves the Vet as she thinks it's Puppy Class.

Hmmm...I'm not sure bc I don't know what you mean exactly by a "flap" of bone..I can't really picture it. What did the vet say it was? Can food get caught under the flap? If yes, it may be good to remove it.

I will make an appointment with the vet but was curious to have any thoughts from yourselves.

I think food could get there. What I am trying to describe is say you have lifted the dogs lip/cheek to expose a large back tooth.

Coming down from the gum on the outside is something like the casing of 'could it be a baby tooth'. It doesn't surround the whole tooth it is as I said almost like a flap coming over - about 1/3rd or less way down alongside the whole tooth.

I looked the other side and similar. She is looking at me now as to say I am beautiful why are you thinking I have something wrong:)

She loves the vet as I said, has to go in when we take our other elderly girl, as she mustn't miss out - so no trouble there.

Millie booked in for teeth clean and inspection for next Tuesday. So will find out then. Intrigued to know what it is.

I have a Yorker I rescues last February weighing 8 # and now weighs a whopping 11# What amount of food is correct for a small dog such as this?

What are you feeding? If, kibble it should have a suggestion on the bag.
If your feeding home cooked meals, what type of food....chicken, vegetables????

Hi and welcome to YT. It sounds like it might be baby teeth. I know Buster retained his Baby teeth and had to have them removed. Please let us know how the visit went. I hope it's something simple.

OK - will be phoning at 2 pm our time to see if Millie well enough to be collected.

However, our Vet has just phoned and said what he saw on her back teeth was very unusual. He hasn't removed these teeth but if she was a human the dentist would fill the 'gap'. He said trying to describe what it is like is - say a block of cheese - on the outside you start to cut a slice down from the top and then part way you stop. So in effect what we saw was the 'slice' left but held in under her gum.

I think I have described it correctly and he said what we need to watch is any plaque building up but he is reluctant to remove her back teeth now.

I asked how she could have done this he said nylon bones maybe - well she doesn't have those. Stones - well she has played with those.

Anyway we will collect her soon and maybe more will come to light.

Will keep in touch - but has anyone else had this?

Buster had to to loose a few teeth as he loved chewing on bully sticks and I thought they were safe. Sadly he sheared the tops off of some of his teeth and was just left with the cracked tops exposed. I had to have the teeth removed and the holes sewn up. He had been pawing at his cheeks and backing away from his soft food but would eat kibble??? I hope she is feeling better.

Well Millie is treating us with a 'Can I trust you and that Puppy Class anymore!!!' She was obviously quite shocked and you could almost read her mind e.g. this place isn't what I thought and you left me!

She has done a couple of little puddles, so unlike her now, we have to go back in a week's time. The vet decided not to take the two teeth out and instead we monitor it to see if it doesn't cause problems.

We discussed in length how it could have happened and she doesn't have nylon bones that he said can do it or stones. BUT - we did say when she wants to start digging in a bank as she can smell rabbits she will spend all day if we let her (we our in a cottage with a paddock - hence rabbits) digging to get into them. So we have decided could be that....

She really does look shocked - hopefully - she will be back to her old self in a few days time. As a rescue she had to gain our trust and it is as though she thought you left me and look what happened. (Our Border Terrriers who are no longer with us and our 15 year old JR 'Millie's companion' are tough and take so much in their stride. Well Millie is apparently got JR in her BUT she is more 'human' silly I know but she will almost talk to you and so intelligent.

LOL I know what you mean Buster has no problem at all communicating his wishes and will even snort in disbelief if he doesn't get his way. He always keeps us laughing with his antics and attitude it's hard to stay mad even when he misbehaves.
Buster came from a commercial breeder/mill and was sold at a very early age. When I first brought him home he was really sick and within the first month he had to stay overnight for a few days on an IV antibiotic drip. When we first visited after leaving him overnight I was shocked at how depressed he was. I think he thought he was being sent back. He perked up when he saw me the first time and we really talked the Vets into letting us spend time with him in the back to reassure him.
