Broccoli scare? Advice? This is going to be quite long, but I hope to get some helpful advice to calm my nerves a little. Yesterday morning Teddy threw up pure yellow bile, I figured it was because he didn't get his breakfast at his normal time and ate a couple hours later in the day so his tummy was empty. All was fine until last night when he woke up out of his sleep and started throwing up again. This time he threw up 3 times back to back, it was a yellow foamy consistency with tiny specs of blood. Obviously the first thing I did when I saw the red specs was freak out and cry. I gave him 1cc of pepto, the vomiting stopped and he slept through the night perfectly fine. He's been very playful, eating and drinking water like normal, no blood in poop and no diarrhea. This morning he was doing well, and then started throwing up 3 times back to back with the tiny specs of blood again. He now seems a little scared to put anything in or near his mouth so I've been giving him water from a syringe. I had no idea where this could be coming from or what the cause of it was.... Until this morning when my brother called and I was telling him what was going on when he mentioned to me that Friday night my husband's mother was feeding Teddy broccoli stalks  he has a sensitive stomach, I don't give him anything but slices of apples from time to time. I've read that broccoli isn't necessarily bad for dogs, but I'm assuming this has to be his stomach being upset reacting to the broccoli since he's not used to eating this. |
Poor little Teddy. I hope his tummy settles soon. My Teddy is sensitive too and we have to stick to a very short list of foods we know he does well with. Any chance your mother in law gave him anything else in addition to the broccoli? I would talk to her and explain Teddy's sensitivities. |

Thank you! I hope he does too. My mother in law drives me insane to say the least. I've spoken to her about this quite a few times, what he can eat and what he can't. She assumes because she can feed her dogs anything and everything in the world that Teddy can handle it. Apparently that's all he had that was out of the ordinary. |
Broccoli Poor Teddy, so sorry he is not feeling well and hope he is better soon. I have never had a problem with broccoli, but I always use cooked and mashed up florets. If the stalk was raw or fibrous it could have been hard to digest...but then I think you would have seen the offending stalks in the vomit? Or it could just be he is very sensitive to broccoli? The blood is worrying and if he is not better very soon on a bland diet I would get him to the vet. |
My dogs eat raw broccoli but they are used to it. It can be gassy for some dogs |

I love bringing Teddy with me when they have little get togethers because he loves to play with the other dogs, but I don't think it's in his best interest or mine to continue tagging along as his safety is way more important to me. I am happy to update though that he's been 24hrs vomit free!! He's been eating and drinking a lot, finally running around like a crazy man again lol very relieved. |
