Puppy tired of his kibble?? Hello, my pup Roy is 5 1/2 months old and a healthy 7.7lbs. He's been refusing to eat his kibble for the past week or two. Everything else is just as usual. He will eat treats and chicken but not his kibble. At first we thought it was due to teething. He lost his incisors during this time so we thought it was uncomfortable for him. We tried soaking it in water and putting pieces of chicken with but he wouldn't eat. My mom suggested getting another brand and he seems to like it. He was fed purina by the breeder and when he came to our house, we changed to Royal Canin. Then, he wouldn't eat his old food and would only eat Royal Canin. Now, he is refusing to eat Royal Canin and really enjoying the sample of Acana that we got for him. I know this post has gotten long but I was just wondering if anyone else's babies are like this?? And why do you think he may be refusing to eat the same food? I don't know if he's just tired of his old food or maybe it's something in RC that maybe bothering him? |
Your pup has managed to get you on that fun ride, "Merry-Go-Round-Dog-Food". I would have suggested to leave him on what the breeder had him on until he was settled into your family/home and then if you wanted to change his food, make the switch after 8 months of age....and once you settle on a specific dog food that you like, he likes and will eat, and is affordable in the long term, stick with it......but too late, you have already started switching all around. If he was eating RC and tolerating it well, stick with it....he may go off his food for a day, maybe even 2 days, but unless you have a pup with hypoglycemic issues, he will eventually get hungry, come around and eat what you have put down for him! But you have jumped onto the "switcheroo game" and he will keep you busy, just like a "short order cook, switching and swapping and offering and preparing and watching and swapping........pup is training you well!!!! Why did he stop eating the RC when he was doing well on it???? He is just like us....he wants a variety in his menu and he will have YOU jumping thru hoops until you please him!! Persistence and consistency is the order of the day!! |
Yes, these pups will lead you on the Merry food dance and drive you crazy! Yorkiemom has good advice and I hope he will heed it,LOL! If you settle on one food, you might try adding a little topper like Parmesan cheese, from the green can, and he may then eat the kibble. As long as it smells good they will usually eat food. Sometimes the food from new bags is not as tasty to them. I heard from a food manufacturer that they spray some 'good stuff' on the kibble to make it attractive and I have noticed that can change with a new bag....from the color of the kibble. Good luck and I hope that he will not be averse to eating one food if you persist. |
Take a look at Stella and Chewys freeze dried patties. |
What ever you decide to do about food/diet, just be absolutely certain whatever you are feeding is designated as PUPPY food....lots of extra stuff that growing puppies need. Dont short change the pup in his food requirements at this stage of his life as his body is processing food into the building blocks that are going to be his foundation for the rest of his life. This is important!! |
Thank you all for the great tips!! I'll stick with this food until I transition him into his adult food and try to stick with that!! |
