Triglycerides Super High - Food help needed please I have been feeding my boys Hill's Ideal Balance Small Breed. The boys love this food but... Max's triglycerides the vet said are off the charts high. She wants him to eat Hill's I/D Lowfat food. The ingredients make me sick! I have been looking at the ingredients all day with dread! I can not feed him this food. PLEASE give me some low fat lower protein food suggestions or what you are using instead of this Rx food. The I/D Lowfat food is 25.9% Protein, 7.4% Fat and Crude Fiber 1.7%. Max is my Morkie. Mickey's Blood was perfect she said. We are getting ready for their dentals so they did the blood work. Thank you everyone :aimeeyork:aimeeyork |
What about homecooking...is that an option for you...? I know some don't like the DFA, but here is a very helpful list from there for you: Best Low Fat Dog Foods | Dog Food Advisor |
Thank you :) I will check the list out |
Low fat food My dog is on a low fat diet and eats Hills ID Low Fat. I agree the ingredients are not what we would choose, but for some reason the food really works and keeps dogs healthy! I use mainly kibble with a tasty topper of low fat home cooked chicken breast, and he happily eats it. There is a food called Earthborn healthy weight or some such category that has good analysis and ingredients. I once added some of that to the Hills kibble and he did well on that too. But please do not worry about the Hills, if your dog will eat it, he will do well. Adding a little low fat topper will please you ( as it is a good pure real food!) and him:) Hope the numbers return to normal on the new diet. |
Hi Chrissy, did the vet give any possible reasons for Max's high triglycerides? Given that they can be related to the functions of the pancreas, liver, kidneys, and thyroid, I think I would want to explore this more. Just a thought. Best wishes for Max and Mickey. |
You could consider RC gastrointestinal low fat... Another RX food. I had good luck with it. I home cook. With triglycerides off the charts, I think I would be going with a vet recommendation first and foremost. If you want specific veterinary diet advice, petdiets is a great reputable source. She's been making foods for my dogs now for over 6 years, curing calcium oxalate stones in my 6 year old and keeping kidney and heart disease at bay in my now 15 year old dogs. |
