Pancreatitis Diet I wanted to share our experience with Pancreatitis, my 13 year old Yorkie Lucy developed bloodly/heavy mucus diarrhea. She stopped eating and got very sick, at 5 lbs it doesn't take long for them to really get in trouble.. Went to the emergency room vet, blood work for enzyme levels confirmed the Pancreatitis diagnosis.. So, what to do? Vet said " low fat no fat diet ", gave me special dog food to try.. This dog food was a soy base soft food.. She wouldn't touch it.. She would not eat and I tried bone less, skin-less chicken and some vegs with pasta.. She would pick out the stuff she like and leave the rest.. I read every on-line search result that I could find and finally found the magic ingredient Sweet Potato. I successfully controlled her Pancreatitis for 3 years until she finally passed from a stoke recently. Friends with Yorkies have had problems with Pancreatitis too.. This food fixed them right up and help put the weight back on .. Lucy got nothing but the food for three 3 years she loved it and the Pancreatitis would occasionally flare up.. but not for long.. She was healthy and active up until a stroke several weeks ago. The Pancreatitis Diet 1 Boiled until completely cooked package of boneless, skinless chicken thighs. About 8 thighs in a package. 2 cups Cooked pastine ( thats the small pasta for soup) cook it by microwaving 5 mins with 2 cans of no fat chicken broth. 1 can mix veg 2 large sweet potato Cooked ( I microwave these ) Place all the ingredients in to a large food processor and blend it into a thick paste. Storage in the frig or freeze the extra for later.. Scope out the meal size portion and with hold all other treats and snacks.. |
Hi and welcome to YT. I'm so very sorry for your loss - it sounds like you took such good care of her. Thanks for posting the diet info. |
Thank you for this information.....fortunately, I have never had to deal with this, but I have copied and pasted it into my records in case I ever need it. I am so sorry about your loss.....if they could only live 50-60 years....but then, as we lost them after all those years, could our own senior hearts even take that??? I dont see that we could, so as much as it hurts, I guess God knows what He is doing when He does call them back to His side.....bless your heart as you work thru your grief.....saying prayers for you as you confront this heartache. |
Pancreatitis Scare We also had a very serious pancreatitis situation with our small one a few weeks ago. She is 4.5 lbs of amazing personality and as a rule her tail never stops, My wife and I are totally convinced that the cause for her Pancreatic attack was the Rabies shot. We took both her and her brother, a giant at 11lbs for their "wellness" check and were both deemed in excellent condition aside from dental work needed for our larger Yorkie. He only needed distemper shot since his rabies shot was 3yr. Our smaller dog was given distemper and we said we were going to wait a week for the rabies shot when we took boy in for his dental work. She was given the shot and 3 days later she was vomiting, had severe diareha, and was in obvious distress. Subsequent blood tests showed her enzyme level at 1875 !!.... over nine times normal !! She spent 3 days at the emergency vet hospital on intravenous and lost over a pound. Our vet denies any cause related to the rabies shot which we now know is crap from further research. She told us she would need a low fat diet the rest of her life and handed us a can of prescription drek which our little one would not eat. We boiled up rice and ground beef and got her eating. We finally found a low fat canned dog food that both dogs love and is beyond top quality |
Pancreatic Scare PT2 To continue...this food is made by a company called Weruva. Check it out. After spending many hours researching, and over an hour instore with a very helpful employee at the dog food store this is what we found. After all is said and done our dogs WILL NOT be getting any shots in the future. The money grab is over as far as we are concerned...... and we are looking for a new DVM as well. |
I recently had a scare with my dog having severe abdominal pain. Luckily it wasn't pancreatitis but severe acid reflux that was brought on by the dog food! I fed him for 1 year (he's only 2 and I got him at almost a year old), the wellness brand dog food. He seemed to love it. I would alternate between the core grain free and the complete health. At almost $20 for a small bag I felt confident in the ingredients and felt that after months of researching that this was a top quality food. Anyway long story short...he now gets 99% leans ground turkey (cooked) with white rice and sweet potato and he hasn't had an episode of belly pain since! Sorry for the loss of your baby. |
Ms Maple was rushed to the ER with hypoglycemia Against all our better judgement we feel in love with a 1.8 lb Yorkie puppy Ms Maple at a local pet store she is 10 weeks old...We got her home and she was not eating well and had a cough, our vet prescribed antibiotic for kennel cough .. Stuffy nose is partically to blame for not eating well.. About the only thing we could get down her was cottage cheese.. 3 days in she got severely hypoglycemic, the vet said she was critical and rubbed Karo syrup on her gums and we rushed to the ER.. Her glucose level was 40 .. IV dextrose and some really good vets have got her back to normal glucose levels .. She is eating and all systems are functioning normally.. We are shocked at how fast she crashed and the vet is feeding her beef baby food and science diet recovery diet every 2 hours.. She is coming home today and we are stocked up on beef baby food and some water with a little Karo syrup.. She still has a little bit of a cough and will be continuing oral antibiotics. Vets advice is to feed her frequently every 2 hrs.. Any advice on helping this little girl avoid another episode... |
My Yorkie had pancreatitis last year as well and was in the ER for a few days. I do feed him RC prescription low fat gastro food mostly canned and a little bit of dry and he loves it. I also boil/steam some boneless skinless chicken breast in it as well as the fat is lower than thigh. |
My dear pup died early this summer t the age of three from Pancreatitis. It's nothing to mess around with. He became sick very suddenly and died in the emergency hospital 4 days later. We never saw it coming. Thanks for the diet plan. We adopted a 5 year old and I am very cautious about what he eats. He seems to be fine and I want to keep it that way! |
