Diarrhea problems, problem eater I adopted my Yorkie, Mr. Pips about 2 months ago. He wandered into my brother's yard with no identification. He took him to the shelter where he was scanned for a chip but that was negative. They gave my brother the option to keep him. So I adopted him and I took him to the vet for a medical and shots. The vet found an unregistered chip but could not identify an owner. He has a cough and was treated for kennel cough. The vet ex-rayed his chest for possible bronchitis or allergies. Ex-ray show an enlarged heart. (We believe this dog was dumped by breeder because several other similar dogs turned up in the same location.) So he is on meds to help the cough. Mr. Pips has been a problem eater from day one. Eventually the only thing he will eat is chicken. Now he seems to be tired of chicken. He will not eat any dog food, rice, potato, beef, lamb, veggies, and today he has diarrhea. What should I give him for the diarrhea and any suggestions regarding diet? Thanks. |
Welcome to Yorkie Talk. The meds could be affecting his appetite and tummy. Some people try pure pumpkin (the kind without any spices) for diarrhea, but pumpkin can worsen diarrhea in some dogs like my Teddy. Did the vet check his teeth and do any bloodwork? Sometimes bad teeth can make a dog reluctant to eat. I would give the vet's office a call and ask if the vet can recommend something for his tummy to go with the meds your pup is on. |
Thanks for such quick response. Will try the pumpkin. |
My vet told me I could give my Joey Kaopectate for his sometimes diarrhea. You could ask your vet if this would be an acceptable answer if the pumpkin does not work. It definitely helps my Joey. He has health issues and is on prescription food because of his diarrhea but sometimes he still gets it and I use the Kao. Best wishes for you and your little one. |
If the diarrhea persists, you do really need to see the vet again for this as something is wrong. Do you want to homecook for him long term? If so, I'd get an actual balanced recipe from balanceit.com. What kibbles have you tried? |
