Yorkie Chewing Their Paws! Hi Everyone! I wanted to get some feed back about my York biting her feet. She has started to chew her feet to the point where they are red, raw and balding. I had no idea how bad it was until I looked at puppy pictures of her with fur on her paws! :eek: Most of the information I read when she first started doing this referred to allergies and diet- so she does not eat and chicken, dairy, grains, wheat, gluten, etc. She eats California Natural- Kangaroo and Red Lentil or Lamb and Green Lentil. Regardless of her diet, she still snack on her tiny feet. Any info would be greatly appreciated :aimeeyork:aimeeyork |
I was going to suggest food allergy but since you have already cut out a lot, it's hard to say. It could be seasonal allergies. Or perhaps she's allergic or sensitive to something in the grass. We always rinse their paws and butts after going outside. It could also be a nervous tick. |
Food allergies are extremely rare, so I really doubt food has anything to do with this. It's much more likely that the paw issues are due to enviro allergies (pollens, dust, whatever). :) Harry used to be a chewy-paw-nibbler, making his little paws quite pink and sore... We watched and watched - finally realising that he was using his back paws to scratch inside his ears...turned out he had an ear infection...and then he was licking his paws clean due to that...:eek: We went to the vet - cleared up the ear infection - he stopped licking those yeasty old paws - happy days! :D Might be worth a thought? My husbands english setter will do this, late summer and into fall is the worst. He takes an allergy medicine to help. It could be from outdoor allergies or from fleas. I would get it looked at. They can start him on a steroid to kick start his system and then some allergy medicine should help. |
Sometimes if there feet get wet and not dried properly. They get hot spots. They chew and just make them worst. I learned this with my dogs. Thinking its okay for them just to dry off. But sometimes they retain moisture. Or it could be something in the paw also. But with my dog its was $100 vet bill for some powered. That cost $10 if you know what the condition is. |
My maltipoo used to do the same thing and i just sprayed sour apple spray on her paws and it stopped. I don't know if it was a medical thing o not but she stopped after the spray. |

FINALLY Stopped Chewing Paws! After 3 years of Heck... Hi All! I wanted to share this with all of you. After three years of veterinary specialists, special diets and paw soaking I FINALLY have something that almost immediately stopped my Jazzy's paw chewing. Activated Quercetin! I had eliminated grains. Then chicken. Then beef. Then all poultry. She was STILL chewing the under pads of her feet. Then I started foot soaks. Then I tried probiotics. Still chewing. Zyrtec used to help but it gave her diarrhea so I stopped it. I love natural or holistic remedies for myself and my pets. I found Activated Quercetin for use on myself as its called "Nature's Benedryl". I gave her a half a pill (the pills are 1,000 mg, or 1 gram) and within hours she was no longer chewing her feet. She had chewed her feet aggressively at least once or twice an hour until now. She now gets 1/4 tablet once a day (some say to use it every 8 hours but I do not). It really is a miracle! I put her back on a regular diet and she has been FINE! Just wanted to share this discovery with you all. :) |
