Skipping Yorkie Hi everyone :) I was wondering if many of you have a Yorkie that skips? Meaning when they trot/run they keep one of their back legs up. I spoke with my friend about it before (she's a vet). She said it usually happens in small dogs and has to do with their knee joint. I can't remember what she said exactly but it's something like the place where the kneecap is is too shallow. She also said it's not normally uncomfortable. Lu started doing it when she was about 10-months and she's doing it more often now. I was just wondering if anyone else has a pup who likes to skip :) |

Holding a leg up is an indication of discomfort. It can be caused by anything from a problem with the paw, to kneecaps (luxating patella), to a hip problem. A vet exam is necessary. If it is LP, a knee problem, the vet can determine the grade (1 - 4) and whether or not surgery is recommended. With LP, the knee can pop out of place. I do not have personal experience with this in my pups, but I believe if the bones are out of place, then the dog is at risk for more serious injury running and jumping. Definitely needs to be looked at. |
Sasha did the same thing....it turned out to be Legg-Perthes...it required immediate surgery once it was diagnosed properly Legg-Calvé-Perthes Disease in Dogs | petMD |
Hmm I might be getting this checked out pretty soon by the sounds of things... I might have misinterpreted what my friend said... That was a good while ago when I asked about it when Lu skipped only once a walk. She does it very often now so yeah, I will definitely get it checked. That's for the advice guys. It's good to know the name of it. |
