Neutering question I just acquired a retired champion show dog (Yorkie). He is a wonderful dog and is almost 5 years old. He was a stud that unfortunately was determined to be sterile. It was lucky for our family, needless to say. Otherwise he wouldn't have been re homed to my family. He's a leg lifter and likes to mark both inside and outside. My question is this: Will it be worth it to get him neutered at this point? Would you go ahead and get him neutered? I am concerned about the health risks of general anesthesia and the effect it might have on him. Will neutering effect his desire to mark? I believe it's important to spay and neuter our pets but he's well into adulthood and sterile. This was confirmed by my breeders vet. Any thoughts? |
Neutering is performed on pups appox. 6 months old to prevent testicular cancer and can help with marking. My adopted rescue was neutered at one year old, he is 4 yo, he does not mark. Neutering this dog now will not stop the marking. I am sure it will aid in preventing testicular cancer but am not 100% sure on this. Hopefully more knowledgeable members can give better advise on testicular cancer. |
I got my Bobby when he was 6 months old and had him spade to prevent testicular cancer -- he still lifts his leg to mark when he is outside on his walks, but if he has to go inside, he will swat on his pee pad. |
I would neuter him. Sometimes it does help. . . . You can put belly bands on him to not have marking done on your furniture. |
How does the breeder know he's sterile? Most of the time, neutering won't change much about marking...esp in your case, when it's been so long already. If you want it done though, I wouldn't hesitate to do it as it's very safe. As long as his pre-surg bloodwork checks out, he should be just fine. :) |
Once neutered, it takes awhile for the testosterone to leave the body. Once it's gone, he will not be producing anymore, so the marking may lessen. But potty training will have to be done like he's a puppy to keep him from marking inside the house. He will always lift his leg but you can train him not to mark inside the house. If he needs a dental cleaning, it would be best to do it while he's under for neutering. That way, he does not need to go under again. |
