cutting hair too short too early I have left my 4 month old puppy with my 12 year old niece and she decided to give him a haircut (because he was too hot). When I came back I rushed to the groomers to fix it (it looks pretty ugly), and they totally freaked me out. They said they never trim hair short on puppies under 6 month of age, he might have damage to his coat later on and even have bold spots?! I never heard of anything like that and can't find any info on this subject. Sounds a bit strange to me. They told me to give him hair growth vitamins and keep him out of the sun. Will he be ok? Any advice will be appreciated. |
I just did some quick googling and I cannot find anything that suggests it is bad for the pup. The only common requirement seemed to be that groomers wanted all the vaccinations done before the 1st groom |
Thanks for reply :) Thank you,I was so worried but I also didn't find anywhere that trimming hair can be harmful. He looks quite funny now with this bad haircut but it only logical that hair will just grow back. He had last vaccine over a week ago so on this front he is ok :) |
No piccies on the bad doo? no yorkie can look bad, they are so full of personality they are just so adorable you never notice a bad cut. |
Why did your 12 yo niece decide to cut his hair, is this kid still alive lol. |
Lol! His hair will grow back unless he's having some type of issue internally/alopecia. Maybe it's the groomers' preference not to cut hair until 6 months, but I can't think of any reason why they wouldn't. His new hair growth won't be damaged and he won't have bald spots from a bad cut job:rolleyes:. Hair is already dead once you see it come from his skin/scalp. The "root" with the little white bulb attached is the living part of hair and as long as it wasn't damaged he'll be fine. Personally, I would look into finding a new groomer if they don't know the basics of hair growth and reasons it won't. |
I took a litter of babies that was 5 months old, along with momma, to my brothers home at Canyon Lake....he had a wonderful, fenced in back yard and I put the dogs out in the back yard so we could play......HUGE mistake!! He has TINY little burrs in his back yard that none of us knew about....those babies and momma were quickly covered with these tiny burrs....cockle burrs???, I have NO idea, but what a hot mess! I had to shave all my babies completely down to their skin to get all those burrs off them....found out they also have those at the beach, where I had taken another group of my adults to enjoy a week at the beach, and the same thing happened! So, I have shaved down completely, 5 month old puppies as well as momma and a year later, several adults. That is when I realized they seem to enjoy the coolness of short hair and it was sooooooooooooooooo much cooler in the Texas heat, and easier to maintain with all the wet and wild summer play things we do in the back yard..... Their hair will indeed grow back with no problem.....dont fret!! But dont be surprised if you see what color their fur is programmed to become when they get older!! |
pew, what a relief :) 4 Attachment(s) Lol :) She still alive, but she is lucky I love her She did it out of best intentions- it is 100 degrees here and we don't have A/C so she thought it was too hot for him with such a long coat. She might have been right actually, but she did a terrible job. I didn't think it did any harm (other than aesthetically) until I went to the groomers to fix it. I just rushed to the nearest one I found. Guess not going back there. Thanks everyone!I am so happy he will be alright! Attaching some photos for those who are curious what the bad yorkie haircut looks like :) |
Thank you so much for reply,Yorkiemom1. I thought it was strange that a haircut could damage his coat, but as a first time dog owner there are so many things I don't know, even though I try my best to be informed. You really put my mind at ease :) |

I always wonder how ideas like this get started. Barabulka, no need to worry. Your baby's hair will grow back. :) |
I've had groomers from me the same thing so you aren't alone. |
i took mine to groomers at 3 months to get a lil trim... his hair grew back fine.. then went again maybe 2 weeks later and they shaved him down.. without my consent... i was furious... but then its all growing back... lol thank god :) |

Here in the States, most groomers won't take in a dog for grooming until they've had all their shots, and here that's at least 6 months of age. I have no idea why that groomer told you it would damage their hair or scalp; it's not true. In time it will grow back. Just be glad your niece did not nick him and cut his skin. Did you check him all over to make sure he has no cuts anywhere on his skin that could get infected? |

Barabulka, your puppy is still adorable. He looks very happy and playful. His hair isn't that short even after the haircuts. It will grow back quickly. :) |
