What am I doing wrong? Hello everyone! I have 2 male Yorkies and I am definitely doing something wrong when it comes to health or breed specific care. So my first male Yorkie who is 2 years old has great hair that drops to the floor but it's very dry. He doesn't seem to have any oil or shine in it, which I thought was normal. When I got my second Yorkie he had this gorgeous fine coat that dropped to the floor with lots of shine and healthy oil in it. They literally looked like they were different breeds because of the healthy coat! I started thinking it was because of the different bloodlines BUT fast forward about 4 months the baby who had the shiny and oily coat now has a dry coat too!! I don't believe it's a grooming issue, I think it comes from the within! All that I do is feed Royal Canine and water. No vitamins or supplements. They absolutely love the food and it's what both breeders feed before I got them. We tried a raw diet for some time but had no luck with the long coats and the mess we need kibble. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. New to Yorkies and I need to know the regimen to keep them as healthy as possible. 🐶🐶 |
I wish I could help but I don't know much about what would make a coat dry other than the shampoo or conditioner that you use. I'm sure someone more knowledgeable will chime in soon. Good luck! 😀 |
My yorkies don't have dry coats, but in humans when they want shiny healthier hair they're often advised to take a B-vitamin, omega(fish oil) supplement, and/or coconut oil. If you choose a supplement try to find one with coconut oil within it as well. Before giving your pups anything, please talk to your vet and ask what he/she advises. |
Just out of curiosity, although you do not think it is a grooming issue: which shampoo/conditioner and other hair products do you use? Sometimes great products can also be affected by water quality. Our water quality has gone down hill in the last couple of years affecting both human and doggy hair in our house. |
Much of a coat/hair texture is determined by genetics. But you could also try adding some fish oil or coconut oil or both (altnerate every other day). I like Ark Naturals Royal Coat fish oil....then any good coco oil will do. |
