Is your dog happy? Is Your Pet Happy? I agree with much of this article but I would say that some variety in a routine is also exciting and good for a dog. I feel that mainly dogs just want to be with you. With you almost anywhere. That is why I try to at times just take one dog away with me for a day or a weekend. Sometimes we will spend an overnight in a motel - after a hike and a swim. Saunter around the next day in a strange town - and then return home. Mostly our dogs are fed after we the humans eat - but occasionally I will feed them before. Sometimes walks are delayed because of rain - or shortened up due to frigid temps. Sometimes I walk the dogs one at a time - and you should see the excitement in the two left at home when I return. The sniffing of each other etc. Then the next one gets to go on a walk alone with Moms! When I train especially near to our home the other two noses are pressed against the front window - and the whining to come out can get intense. My dogs get engaged watching the other dog train out front - and when it is their turn they are so eager to go! JMT |
Good article. I have to say, I agree that play and exercise are SO important to dogs. Mine just *love* their walks so much! And they love to play fetch as well (well, everybody but Arthur, who thinks it's rather gauche or something, lol). |
I think the most important thing to keep dogs happy is exercise and walks. I see so many dogs in my neighborhood that never get walked. Surprise, they are constantly barking. They are bored! And so many of them are outside. Can you imagine in this Vegas heat?! Those poor things. |
Unfortunately yes I can imagine that - Don't get why you have a dog and keep them outside. Sure I understand farm dogs - dogs herding cattle etc but even then they have access to fresh water and a place to find shade and sleep in the barn or some such structure. Sled dogs is another working breed especially if you are training them to be sled dogs. Where I walk in my city I don't see dogs in the backyard so much and definitely not where I live. And mainly dogs when I walk my neighbourhood are kept on lead too. I guess we city Canucks maybe more apt to obey the leash laws that are everywhere. |
I have not seen many dogs being walked off leash. I have unfortunately seen a lot of dogs that got out. Most likely they had cabin fever stuck in the backyard all day. Or not fixed and smell a female somewhere. So many irresponsible pet owners. But as far as farm and sled dogs... No problem there bc they have a job to do and that keeps their mind busy. It's the poor dogs locked in their backyards day in and day out. And if you were to see our neighborhood and the lot sizes we have, they are very small and the backyards are like a bowling lane. No room at all for a large dog to get enough exercise, even not enough for a medium dog! |
I do hear you. And I so agree that it is a sad state of affairs. |
