At My Wits End with Dog Food! I am totally befuddled by Zoey's eating habits. She will eat something for a while, then will totally refuse to eat it. She was eating Fromm's really well for quite a while, then one day just turned up her nose at it and stopped eating. I tried canned dog food. She ate one type for a while, then stopped. So I made her some food from a recipe I found online. She ate it for a few days and is now turning up her nose at it and refusing to eat it. I don't know what to do. I would prefer she eat the Fromms. From everything I read, it is a pretty good food -- and the first kibble she would even touch. I've never had a dog that is such a picky eater. She will, however, eat part of my grilled cheese sandwich, if I give it to her. I don't give it to her very often, but sometimes can't resist those little eyes begging me for a bite. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! |
Helllo! I fed Fromm as well then my pup started doing the same thing as yours lol. We've now been using Primal freeze dried raw formulas for about 3 months and they anticipate meal times. It is a bit expensive if you have more than 1 dog, but it's so worth it knowing they lick their bowls clean! Also, you could stick with a particular brand but switch formulas every now and then for her? Maybe she's just tired of eating the same thing every day? Home cooking may be an option as well. |
I really believe in raw food. Primal or Nautres Variety are my faves if your pup doesn't have any digestive issues. I can guarantee you they will NEVER turn up their nose that this food. Unfortunately, my Zoey has to be on an rx diet. My vet said she had me trained when I described the same problem as you. He says dogs will eat garbage and they will not commit suicide by not eating. So I have to be more stubborn than she when it comes to eating. It is so hard but they can make us crazy trying to please their palate. |

I'm also a raw feeder, they love their meal times. Mostly Primal frozen & occasionally freeze dried, when I forget to thaw out the frozen in the fridge. I also always have a couple of bags of Stella & Chewy's freeze dried. They get some as treats too. I like that they have a variety of proteins & I rotate the protein for every bag. Quote:

I've tried just about anything & everything to get them to eat kibble...enthusiastically. Loll Scrambled/ fried/ boiled egg, salmon, tilapia, cod, chicken, cheese, green beans, all kinds of veggies & fruits (that they like as treats). They would pick the yummy stuff & leave the kibble! Then, I added canned food....that was another problem bc they would gobble the kibble down w/out chewing. So I moistened the kibble & added canned food. That worked for awhile... There's nothing wrong w/adding fresh whole foods to their kibble. Just FYI, if you're going to home cook, you'll need to add vitamins & minerals to make it a complete balanced diet. There's a sticky about home cooking on top of this forum. |
Actually, it was in the library: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/die...king-more.html The Honest Kitchen also makes premixes, where all you need to do is add your own protein. They also have complete diets. |
I think I saw someone say sprinkling parmesan cheese on the food helped them eat. |
Don't forget that around 7 months they have done the majority of the growing, so they often become much more selective in what they will eat. Kibble was made as a convenience to humans, you can leave it out without it going bad, and also dogs will only eat until they are satiated, they will not overeat. This is not true of fresh foods and raw food, many dogs will overeat to the point of death or at least vomiting. When she's not hungry, take away her food after 15 minutes, and put it out at the next meal, if she goes over 24 hours without eating something may be wrong, but don't tempt her with things like grilled cheese, even a sick dog would be tempted to eat that! Dogs inherently understand that sometimes they shouldn't eat. I do think you are teaching her to be finicky. I'm not saying you shouldn't try another food, but sometimes the healthier the kibble, the less likely they are to overeat and this can actually be a good thing. |
Ugh My Zoey was like that too...Idid the toppers and flitted around a little with different food. I have found if they teally are not eating HILLS RX ID is what did eat , canned. After 3 months of that she stopped eating that and I went with natures variety instinct kibble cause she likes to crunch...and she loves it and has lasted several months on that. Lately I switched to the healthy maintenance cause she's been struggling with her weight..... |
You may want to give raw a try...and/or mixing some raw in w/ her food. Also, sprinkle Parmesan cheese powder on her food, it may help... |
I would also suggest not changing food along with the taste whims of your puppy. Dogs will eat when they're hungry and I think our perception of whether or not they 'like' their food is often our perceptions and not reality. As long as they are eating and they are healthy, then I would try to not overthink it too much! |
My little dog eats various foods which she gets as a treat with her food. Pasta with broccoli rabe and sausage. Pizza, eggplant, italian sandwiches, etc. there are a couple of bakeries in Providence. Now only give the dog small bits of food. They like that, and they won't get sick. |
