Lump found on puppy Hi everyone, I am suppose to get my 12 week old yorkie on Wednesday. The breeder contacted me last night and said that while bathing Georgia she found a small lump on her lower belly/towards her leg. She said that its not hard, its squishy...like air trapped under her skin. She asked that I don't send the balance I owe yet until she sees the vet Monday (appt. for her 2nd boosters that day). To me it sounds like an inguinal hernia. If it is, or something not too serious, what do I do? My heart is set on her! Please advise as to what I should do and what this may be. |
I was thinking it sounds like a hernia too. I would go ahead and get the puppy if the breeder agrees to pay for the surgery. I have to applaud your breeder for being ethical and telling you about the bump. |
200 atta girls to that breeder!!! She certainly did the right thing! I got a little girl years ago from a breeder with the same ethics....she pointed the inguinal hernia out to me, said it may eventually even go away (which it did close and went away), but she told me to check with my vet, see what my vet would charge for corrective surgery, and she lowered the price on the puppy, plus a little more to cover any post op meds, etc......The hernia did resolve, surgery was not needed, and I have never forgotten the ethicis and honesty and integrity of that precious little elderly breeder.....found out years later she was a very well known and well respected breeder/shower/AKC judge..... |
Found this also..... "Many puppies that come in for first shots at the vet office at 6wks have inguenal hernias. Almost all of those close by the second-third booster. It is just that some take 8-10wks to close while some are closed at 8-10 days of age. Most puppies have none from birth because that space closed in utero in development. But it is a common problem that usually self-resolves by 10-12wks or less. And it is usually considered hereditary in nature. But the dogs easily make good pets." I can not begin to remember when or where I got this information....I have had it in my files for many, many years! |
