Coughing Issue ? Hello All As you all my yorkie is my best friend and in saying it is equally important to keep him in the best of health. In the morning he coughs every day. i like all concerned parents give him a bit too much attention when he coughs. So I am noticing this spoiled creature, bless his heart, is coughing to get affection. After he has a fitful cough (generally in the morning) but almost any time. I ask what is the matter and I see his tail wagging. This morning he coughed 20x times as soon as I told him NO he stopped. As I write this I am realizing that he is spoiled. He is 8 years old, runs and fetches the ball like there is no tomorrow. Looks and acts extremely healthy. I am familiar with the yorkie tracheal collapse issue, he does not look like he is hurting ... but he is coughing and the tail is certainly wagging. I cannot get mad at him. Just these dreadful fits of coughing ... Has anyone experience this same phenomenon ???? Please Thanks a ton beforehand ... just need to know if this is common . |
I would check in with the vet to rule out kennel cough and collapsed trachea. It's doubtful that he is doing this just for attention. |
He may have a reverse sneeze...often when excited they do this. They definitely don't cough for attention. I suggest you get a video of it if you can and show your vet. |
Could be kennel cough or trachea issues. Also heart problems can make them cough. i would have him checked since he is 8. If it is trachea they can give you medicine for inflammation and cough medicine so he does not cough as much. Keep us updated. |

OMG [B]This is it ... !!:) He licks like crazy too ... and my girlfriend has been feeding him too too much food for the past several months and I have been the culprit too. CT most yorkies are historically prevalent to that throat issue:D but I think the acid reflux is the answer. :) Thanks a ton folks. |

Now smaller portions and bland rice and chicken with a bit a broth to hydrate. I cannot believe that I can count the number of coughs and sneezes, he has now in one hand! Very happy to hear the great news! If you haven't already, talk to a doggy dietician about formulating a diet that will help since chicken and rice are not enough long-term. Pepcid I will try Pepcid How much should i give him?? Just the store bought kind?? ...he seems OK now I can count the coughs on my hand now. One day or two ... like tonight I gave him cheese ... spoiled guy. I am well aware it creates acid, he started licking his lips. So no night snack for him ... maybe never again. Buddy is eight years old, I assumed he was getting a collapsed trachea. I even spoke to a great vet, several times, and they assumed the same. He has been coughing for many years ...and I say that in totally embarrassed. Truly a learning experience. :eek: Now as I say, I can count the number of coughs in one hand. :) I looked at the diet site … I will look at it in more detail. Thanks so much all!! |
So, a vet did not diagnose this as reflux? While it may be that, I would still recommend doing a video and showing the vet. |
coughing Inadvertently, I did not tell the vet all the symptoms. He is the best.:) It would be really difficult to make a video now. He is much better. I will keep that thought.:) Thanks |

I suspect that it is the acidic digested food being propelled up his throat and causing to cough. I actually just gave him half a pepcid tablet.
