Best Food For Yorkie Puppy
 

My daughter is getting a yorkie puppy (8 1/2 weeks) on Saturday. He is currently eating Fresh Pet Foods from Target. I do not thisnk this is probably that great of a food. I want to buy her puppy the very best food that is available. What do you suggest?

"If your breeder is trustworthy, and apparently she is as you purchased a puppy from her, please do as she has suggested and leave this puppy on the food she has grown up with......she has enough to get acclimated and accustomed to with new owners, new house, new schedule, no momma or littermates.....please do not add just another stressor to this little soul. While you may now particularly care for Purina, it is NOT toxic and this baby will be fine on it until she is about 8 months old. She will be very well accustomed to everything that is so new to her at your place, and then you can change her diet with much less emotional stress on the puppy. It is the emotional stress that concerns me the most when these little souls go to new homes and have enough to get used to without loosing the only thing they have left that they know from their breeder."

Your baby is on a different brand of food, but the issue is the same....emotional stress caused by disrupting everything this baby in familiar with. And this baby is really young....most reputable breeders want the very best start in life for their puppies so they will hold them until at least 12 weeks old.

Thanks for your reply. I don't think she will change his food right away. He needs to get settled into their home. But she wants him to eventually be on the best food possible. Good nutrition is so important to any animal.

A pup should stay with there mom until 12 weeks, that is what reputable breeders do. A lot of people like fresh pet but is it ok for pups? Not sure. I would keep pup on what there eating for at least a month or two. Some of my favorites are Royal Canin, Wellness and Acana.

He is not coming from the best situation. Three puppies were dumped at the local shelter but not the mother. Because we know the person who runs the shelter she is allowing my daughter to take the puppy home. When my daughter and her boyfriend first get the puppy my husband and I will be watching the puppy while they go to work. My daughter only works a couple days a week so the puppy will have someone with him pretty much all of the time.

Being he is starting off with a rough start we want him to eat the very best food he can. They are planning on keeping himm on his current food for awhile and once he is a few months old switching over.

When you do switch the food over in a few months, be sure to do so gradually. At that time, you can mix some of the new food in with the old and do a little more of the new food each day. Try to do the transition over a period of a few weeks, just to be safe. We changed our Bella's food over a two week period, and that seemed to work--she's on Wellness right now. The other foods recommended by Lovetodream88 are also good.

Besides the advice on food, here is a little more advice on health issues of young puppies. This happened a couple of times with our Bella, who we got at the age of 8 weeks: Since the puppy is so young, be aware of the signs of hypoglycemia and have some Nutrical or karo syrup on hand for emergencies. If the puppy starts shaking or looks drunk or wobbly, rub a little karo on his gums and call the vet immediately.

If you notice any of the symptoms of hypoglycemia in your dog, it is advisable to see a veterinarian immediately. If your dog has already lost consciousness, or is visibly at the point of collapsing, you will need to call your veterinarian for instructions on immediate at-home treatment, followed by a visit with the doctor.

Even if you are able to treat your dog at home during the episode of hypoglycemia, you will still need to see your veterinarian so that blood work can be done.

Great news that the plan is to keep him on the food for awhile. I'd keep him on his current food for at least a month, if not for 6 weeks given he is so very young right now.

At that point, switch over gradually. I feed mine pre-made raw by either Primal or Natures Variety. But if you want too feed kibble I recommend Natures Logic, Natures Variety, Wellness Core, Solid Gold (Wee Bits or Barking At The Moon), Acana/Orijen.

If I keep a new puppy on purina so as not to stress her out, When and how can I switch to prey model raw. I am confused as to how to give large enough so they don't choke yet not over feed as my new pup is expected to,mature to 4.9 lbs. thanx
