Opinions re: feeding Hi all! Teddy was just at the vet a couple of weeks ago and he has been given the all good for health from the vet. The vet keeps reassuring me that Teddy is the 'perfect weight' but he eats his food so fast .. How do I know if he needs more or if he's just being a little pig :p ? He's currently on Acana, is 4lbs 2oz and a year and a half old, thanks! |
This is a tough one bc I have 2 major gobbler/inhalers and then 2 who are more relaxed about eating. I too always feel kinda bad for the inhalers bc I wonder "are they satisfied? Are the getting enough? Why are they so desperate about their food? etc" -- but then I look at/feel their body condition and I know they're doing good. So it's tough to say... |
I agree with Ann, I go by body condition when determining how much food is enough. My boys have both become fast eaters. Max doesn't self-regulate at all anymore, and Teddy barely. Given the opportunity, they would both continue eating until they were sick -- unless there was something more exciting to do. If we are outside of the house, they are not food driven. At home, the desire for food is greater because it is tied to fun and attention. The boys will keep doing things for rewards, even if it is something small like brown-nosing with smiles/head tilts in the kitchen while we are cooking. |
Abby is such a busy active pup that gobbles her food. I monitor her weight with a scale once a month and keep a regular eye on her poop- seems like enough going in means a healthy going out. Ziva is just the opposite she dawdles over her food, and gains weight if she gets a little extra. They are both 6 1/2 lbs but A is long and lanky, Z is short and boxy. |
My pups had a food change and are actually eating a bit more than what's recommended because they gobble their food down so fast and I feel as if I'm starving them:rolleyes:. My breeder told me to feed what's recommended of their preferred food (Primal) and leave kibble(Fromm) down for 30 minutes after their dinner. Her reasoning was if they were truly hungry they'd eat the kibble...they weren't hungry lol. Like others have stated, I check their body composition and since they're puppies I make sure that they're gaining weight at a stable rate. |
Thanks all. I am doing exactly what you all have advised which is feed him as per the recommendation and weigh him. He is weighed each week on my kitchen scales and stays a stable 4lbs 2 oz (unless he gets into the cats food!) which the vet confirmed is ideal for his structure. Thanks again! |
