PLE.......lymphasia I have been treating my 10 year old yorkie for lymphasia that was diagnosed via ultrasound. We did not do an endoscopy. Abby was put on prednisone and atopica and a low fat diet (royal canine). After 5 weeks her blood levels increased to low normal. She was then put on a slightly lower dose of prednisone and her diet was changed to Purina HA. Her blood tests yesterday showed that all of her levels had dropped back down to below normal. The prednisone has now been increased. It is weakening my little girl. I am at my wits end. Any experience and advice would be appreciated. I am starting to think that perhaps I should have the vet do the endoscopy and maybe the lymphasia is caused by a food allergy or something. Help! |

I personally think doing the endoscopy is the ideal way to go. You then would have more details. Often a pup with lymphangectasia will also have IBD. In my Cookie's case, she did have both and I consulted with a vet nutritionist and I home cook for her. She has been on the same diet since she was diagnosed in Dec. 2011 and is doing very well. She was only taken off of prednisone this past year. They tapered it as we went along and her protein levels improved...and then they kept her on a low dose every other day until they finally took her off of it. Sometimes they can have a fungal infection, histoplasmosis, so as I said, it is good to have the biopsies done so that you know. Abby's sickness My vet 98% sure of the lymphasia, and doesn't feel she needs to do the endoscopy. I have been making food. She liked it at first, and now turns away from the food. The prednisone is causing her to lose bladder control. The cyclosporine has been increased to two pills in am and one 12 hours later. Her last blood test was worse than the very first test she had. This is quite the battle. Did it take a long time to your Cookie's disease under control? |

I think I might be looking for a second opinion and/or an internal med specialist. As for the appetite, that is often a problem ... once they are really ill it is often difficult to get them to eat. You might want to ask your vet if some mirtazapine would help. Prayers for your pup...hope things start to improve soon. |
Sick Abby My internal med doc is my third opinion! Peak Veterinary Referral Center Seems to be all over the US. Abby responded initially, then she was switched from Royal Canine Low Fat to Purina HA. Her blood tests went bad after the switch. Yesterday I started going back to the Royal Canine Low Fat. I think that may be why the blood levels went sour. I asked my primary care vet for flagyl yesterday as that seemed to be part of the drug regiment a couple of months ago. Thanks for your response. I'm glad your Cookie responded quickly. It's funny, Abby barks and barks when she sees me fixing her food, but when I put it down for her, she just nibbles out the good stuff!! I'm hanging in there, but getting discouraged! Thanks again. |
