Low salt Dog food for small dogs? I'd like to know if anyone has experience with dogs that need a low salt diet? If so, what food do you feed? I make homemade df, but not everyday and never use salt when I cook it. I was surprised to find out they add it to dog food. I hardly even use it when I cook for people, for preventative health reasons..and I cooked for a human with a heart condition for many years, lol. I just got used to not adding any salt. Appreciate feedback. Thank you:) |
Unless your pup has been diagnosed by a qualified vet, with a disease/condition that requires low salt intake, the salt that is in dog food will not have any effect on him. People/pets/anything with a beating heart that is driven by the firing of an electrical system within the cardiac muscle,needs salt intake. If you are normal, a normal intake of sodium daily, is required for good heaslth and to facillitate the electrical firing impluse that makes your heart beat. Unless you have a condition that requires a low salt diet, there is no need to go overboard limiting your salt intake.....that can be just as detrimental on various organs in your body, as too much salt intake. You get into issues with sodium/potassium/calcium/fluid balances..... Dont add salt to your dogs food, but the salt included in your dog food will not hurt your pup in the absence of a diagnosis requiring salt restrictions. |
Ty, but I do have a lil dog with Congestive HF..its early stages, but the vet did recommend eliminating salt. I can get dog food from the vet but wondered if there is a brand that anyone has used that the dog will eat. Harry is also on meds and limited activity. |
Ask your vet specifically how much salt your pup can be allowed to have in his diet daily, then you can go from there! Is he saying salt free diet or a sodium restricted diet....there is a difference and he needs to be specific for you. |

My Yorkie was just diagnosed with COPD and an enlarged heart, also a little water in her lungs. I always fed her Blue kibble for seniors (she's 11) the vet recommended h/p low sodium prescription dog food. She has been drinking very little water ( if any) and she barely ate the dog food. I know it's not right to keep changing their food but I don't want her last years to be miserable. I started her on Core today, all natural. I'm hoping it works! Just not sure why she's not drinking her water? I change it each day..any suggestions? Thank you, (I'm new) |

Did you speak with your vet about the prescription food? Perhaps he/she can suggest another one. I understand you don't want her unhappy...in fact I totally get it, but you must be careful with the food choices. I don't know anything about the food you have chosen, but I can tell you that if a vet suggested an RX food, that is what I would give OR I would home cook under the direction of a vet nutritionist. As for the water....is she eating canned food? Sometimes they drink less when on canned food. Best wishes with your pup. |
