Dental & Possible Micro Chipping..... Kiki is having her first dental cleaning next week. I'm a nervous wreck I hate having to leave my baby and really hate that she has to be put to sleep. What do I need to expect? Anything I can do to make it easier for her? I'm also trying to get my husband to agree to have her micro chipped while she is under. Overall her life is very controlled so he doesn't see it is necessary. what are the pros and cons of having it done? Can you even feel it under their skin? |
My dogs are very controlled too but you just never know! If someone steals your dog or your dog gets lost, a microchip can reunite you. I have all of mine microchipped. Two were microchipped during a dental as well and it was no big deal. It's a one time fee to implant the chip and get it registered. You do not have to sign on to the extra packages. You can barely feel it under their skin, it's the size of a grain of rice. You can't see it. As for the dental cleaning, try not to worry. They will sedate her and put her to sleep and clean and polish her teeth. If you're having dental xrays done, they will do those at the same time. When they are done cleaning and polishing, they rinse out the mouth and get her woken up and into recovery. My Winston recently went for his..... I dropped him off at 8 AM and he was ready for pickup by 3. He was a little groggy, but by dinner around 6 PM he was hungry and ate a small meal. He was sleepy all night but by the next morning he was running around all peppy. Even when I've had extractions done, they've been fine. |
I think microchip is a must. I say to take advantage of the anesthesia and have it done. No matter how careful we are they can become lost and this is really the only way to prove it is your dog. You can feel it if you hunt for it, but I don't generally feel it just by petting them, bathing them, etc. As far as dental procedures, they are not as deeply sedated as they would be in a surgery and the gas anesthesia they use for small dogs is quickly reversible. I always take all precautions I can and do blood work ahead of time to make sure all is normal, request iv in place during procedure and a warming pad is used. |
Microchipping really has to be up to you. I have heard some awesome reunited story's because of them and then I have heard some negative effects of them. My yorkie is never left alone and never has been since we got her so mine is not chipped but our situation is a little different then most. |

Why do you request an IV and warming pad? I wish they would let me drop her off in the am but the require an over night stay the night before to ensure she hasn't had anything after midnight. |

that is a bit strange. Uni had an overnight stay for her spay bc they don't take appts and they had an emergency and her spay didn't happen till later in the day. But for a dental that is a bit weird. For the chip, it's an extra level of security, and only costs about $25. The only downside is if your dog is stolen, the vet's won't scan the dog unless the person who brings them in asks for it. There are good samaritans out there, but reality is, is someone stole your pet (and kept it and didn't sell) they wouldn't take the dog to the vet unless really necessary bc they fear of the scan. But most vets don't scan unless you request it! I think it should be required of all vets but they don't want to put their clients on the spot (since they are paying them money). Even all that said, mine have all been chipped. Make sure the info is always up to date. |
I do know they only does procedures first thing in the morning. She doesn't take any appointments until 10 am for office visits. She said that way everyone gets to go home the same day. (I didn't ask about spay because that has already been done) |
I'm really leaning toward chipping her. Even though 99% she is safe in our home. Something could always happen and just maybe it would help us get her back. I did read some negative issues from them but I think that comes from anything. |

I know how scary it is to put your baby under, but as long as you do the pre-surg bloodwork, your kiddo should be a-okay. Try not to worry as best you can and just know you're doing the right/best thing for your baby. |

I know it is best for her I just don't want to leave her over night. Our vet is about 30 mins away from us too! |
Well I dropped her off and I'm sure we both cried about it. But it will be over before either of us know it. |

Thank you so much. I GOT MY BABY BACK!!! They said she did great and that she has great teeth. She didn't have any extractions. |

It appears her UTI is back. They found broken up crystals in her urine Friday but no infection. She has blood in her urine now :( |

I'm not sure. She just had her first uti about a month ago now . It all makes my head spin I'm not familiar with the terminology for one. But when we went back for her recheck she wouldn't pee so I asked them to get a sample with she had her dental. They told me they found some broken up crystals no blood or infection and her pH was spot on. I'll be calling them first thing in the morning |

I did a little research and was going go ask about a culture & matching right meds. They told us if it came back it would come back with a vengeance. Her blood work showed no infection but they also told me heruurinary tract could hide a uti because it isn't in her blood |

No but she did bring it up. She didn't give her the antibiotic that would have been her first choice because she thought it would upset her sensitive stomach but I want to knock out and get her over this. Is it normal to not be able to see blood in her urine all the time? She just used the potty pad and it looks normal but it most definitely was not earlier. A friend suggested having her checked for diabetes when her blood work was done 2 weeks ago her sugar was slightly higher than normal |
