Help with Food I found out my puppy was getting sick in the middle of the night due to an empty stomach. This brought to my attention that she really doesn't eat much dry food. So I am looking into wet food and I need your opinions. 1. Do you prefer wet or dry food and why? 2. Puppy is currently on Hills Science Diet dry and I noticed Hills has multiple brands (Healthy Advantage, Ideal Balance, etc.). Since it's all Hills can I mix and match without a problem of the stomach from my dog? Thanks Stephanie |
How old is your puppy/how long have you had her? If she's not eating my first suggestion would be to take her to a vet to make sure she's physically okay. After a vet checks everything is fine...I feed Fromm Gold Puppy Formula (dry food). Why? No particular reason, it's just less messy. My breeder did feed wet mixed with dry food when she was younger and teeth were coming in. I tried switching her over gradually(old brand mixed with Fromm) but she would just pick out the Fromm. Also, Nutracal can stimulate appetite and keep glucose levels on the up and up but you shouldn't become dependent on it. Even though it's the same food company I would still try to gradually switch so as not to upset her stomach. |
She is healthy, she was checked by a vet. |
Joey's breeder told me to free feed the first 7 or 8 months. They can vomit from having low blood sugar or just an empty stomach. With low blood sugar, they lose their appetite, and the very thing that will help them which is food, they refuse to eat. I kept a little food and water in his kennel at night and when he got up to pee, he was give a few cheerios. When they are sleeping through the night, you can just give them some food before bedtime. Also, it's important to choose a food where protein is the main ingredient. Proteins stay with you longer then carbohydrates. Carbohydrates can make you feel full faster, but they also can make you feel hungrier sooner. Look for a food where a protein is the first ingredient, especially a protein meal. Fresh chicken may sound great, but it has much more water and if it's the first ingredient, it doesn't mean that protein is the number one ingredient. Food manufactures can get very tricky, so you have to know a little bit more than they think you know. |

One of my boys used to throw up bile in the middle of the night sometimes, but that completely stopped when I started giving them a snack as we are getting into bed. I give CocoTherapy coconut chips, and they love them! I feed a combination of wet and dry foods. At first I used the wet to entice them to eat since they were both super picky puppies. I still feed it now because I like getting the extra moisture in their diets (one doesn't drink too much) and they love it. I give either Grandma Lucy's or Honest Kitchen with their morning kibble, and Weruva (canned) with their evening kibble. |
