Best heartworm protection? What do you use? What brand? There was an older thread, but it seemed to devolve in to a discussion of whether to give the meds or not. I do want to give them, so what is the best?! And why? Thanks |
I like and use heartguard but I heard interceptor is back on the market and that was my favorite. When Callie is due for more in September we will probably go back to interceptor. I would not use Trifexis it is very dangerous! |
Heartworm meds I don't know which is the best, but I use Sentinel Spectrum. This covers flea eggs and larvae too. The worms it covers are: Heart worms, roundworms, hookworms ( eggs not adults) whip worms, tapeworms. The Sentinel alone covers all the above but NOT Tapeworms!! My dog tolerated this oral med well. Heartgard Plus for example only covers Heartworms, roundworms and hookworms( adults). So although the major use is for Heartworm, as that is a very hard thing to treat and can be fatal, the other worms can invade your dog and do need killing too. Tapeworms come from the dog eating fleas, and hookworm from the ground via their feet and skin. So these are some you should consider as important. So I would talk with your vet and see what you need for your dog in your area, and check which medication is the right one. Heartworm and fecal tests should be done before dosing. Good luck:) |
We use Sentinel. We previously used heartgard and years ago used interceptor. |
I use Sentinel here with my girl's. |
I think it depends on the individual dog to determine which product is best. My dog won't take any chews so we use topical. Mine tolerates Advantage Multi well which covers flea, lice, heartworm, intestinal worms including hookworm, roundworm, whipworm except tapeworm (my vet uses Droncit for tapeworms when needed), Sarcoptic and Demodectic mange. It does not cover ticks. For those that needed ticks coverage, there is Advantix II which repels fleas, ticks, mosquito but it doesn't cover intestinal worms and cannot be used on dogs less than 4 lbs. All in all, I like the Advantage Multi a lot better and have used it for many years since Pao is now almost 9 years old. |
