licking in the air My dog is 8 years old. He's licking his feet and in the air constantly. We give him special food and wash him with special shampoo cause of allergy. What can we do? |
Seems like you're taking general preventive measures for his allergy. Have you tried taking him to a specialist? Even if you're giving him "special food", there could be an ingredient in that food that's making him allergic. How long has his been doing this? |
He has been having it for the last 5 years But the licking in the air is for the last couple of months. The tablet food is Vets Choice Sensitive. The shampoo is Betadine. He is also on Prednizone. One each day. |
It's my understanding thst licking air is a sign of nausea. |
Did you put him on that food b/c he has a sensitive tummy or was it for allergy? I saw the ingredients and perhaps you might consider changing his food to limited ingredient? Here's a link for you to take a look at for food if you decide to try it out. Search Results limited ingredient But I think it's best if you took him to a vet/specialist and consult for better assessment. |
We put him on that food b/c of an allergy. Prefered by the Vet. . He is stil keeping on with the licking and scatching his chin. |

Rice, duck meal, animal fats, vegetable fiber, beef pulp, minerals, liver digest, Zeolite, Trace elements, vitamins, fish oil. Rice, duck, fat, beef... are you sure he's not allergic to any of these? Does it seem like he's doing it more in certain seasons or is it about the same all year round? Have you changed detergents for clothes/house cleaning about the time he started showing these symptoms? Again... it's hard to pinpoint what's causing allergies so the only suggestion I have is for you to take out one thing at a time to see if it makes any difference. |
Food allergies are extremely rare, so changing foods likely won't do a thing for symptoms since the kiddo prob has enviro/pollen alleriges, as evidenced by paw licking. Read here on how to approach and treat allergies: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/die...tart-here.html The air licking can be from reflux, dental issues, dry mouth/throat/scratchy, nausea, allergies... |

Yesterday while having my JR terrier having her yearly wellness check up I mentioned this to my vet as Sugar will do this as well from time to time, she said this is also a symptom of a seizure of some kind. With Sugar being diabetic she said in her it was more than likely that . She said unless it became unbearable she wasnt going to give Sugar meds for it . Sugar only does it when her blood sugar is low so for me it is a pre warning . Again it is best to check with your vet as it can be anything from stress , allergies, just so many things. It depends on your dog. |
I've heard several places that seizures can cause air-licking also. Plus, here's an article I found about some other causes: Why Does My Dog Lick The Air? - After the vet visit, if this keeps up, you could keep a video log of the air-licking, together with his paw-licking, and present the video log to the vet as a aid to him in helping diagnose his problem. I believe I might be keeping a journal of what you feed, when and your dog's scratching and paw-licking could also probably help your vet. |
