Adult Food Hi, Our pup will be a year old in a month so I'm starting to think about transitioning him to adult food. He's been on canned Blue Buffalo chicken dinner for puppies and I've been using their turkey and rice dry food for treats for trick training. With the weather being so cold, he hasn't been able to go for walks since December and seems to be getting a bit portly so moving him to adult food is likely a good idea anyway. I know that I'll need to do the transition slowly. We want to stay on canned food for the main food since there were crystals in his urine briefly a few months ago and the vet thought that the canned would be less conducive to that. However, I'm wondering whether I should stay with Blue Buffalo and whether chicken is the best food for him. He seems to be scrating a lot.... Thanks. Linda |
I wouldn't feed blue buffalo there have been a lot of issues with them latley and they don't seem to be very trustworthy. If he is itching he could have environmental allergies. |
Any suggestions re: other brands (that are relatively easy to find in the stores)? Thanks. Linda |
Wellness, Royal Canin, Natural Balance, science diet has some new ideal balance foods that are good too |

I would not touch Purina they are the makers of the waggin train chicken jerky that was linked to hundreds of dogs deaths and it took them years to pull it off the market and then they just put it back. They are also the makers of beneful dog food that has been linked to many dog deaths. They are just not trust worthy in my opinion. |
Hi, We've decided to try the Wellness brand (I notice we can also order it via Amazon which could be rather useful). I know that we'll have to start slowly -- a spoonful of the new food with each meal and then a bit more etc. until finally it replaces the original food. And I gather that we'll have to do that with each flavour of food (We decided to start with Turkey and Sweet Potato). A couple of additional questions -- What do other people do about food flavours? Should I just stick with the Turkey/Sweet Potato if it's OK or should I get Monty used to other flavours as well? (Whitefish and Sweet Potato sounded interesting and so did the Lamb varieties). And what should I do about amount of food now that he's on adult food? He's a bit overweight -- 8.6 pounds and is starting to look a bit portly. I suspect he should be around 7 pounds. I can feel that there are rolls of fat around his neck when I brush him. He loves his food though and gobbles it all up. I've thought perhaps that the problem was that the puppy food he's getting might be too nutritious for him now plus it's been too cold to walk him for several months. So -- how much of a 12.5 oz can would it be normal to feed him each day? (The instructions are a bit vague (talking about "up-to-15-pound dogs....). Thanks. Linda |
