Transitioning to Adult Dog Food My Smokie is 10 months old and the Vet told me I can start transitioning him to adult dog food. I am planning to switch him to the same brand of food just adult food for small breeds. Do I transition him gradually a little of the puppy food mixed with the adult food? How much of each and how many days should I do this before he is transitioned? Thanks for your response....:aimeeyork |

Yes, you should switch gradually. The adult version of the same brand is never exactly the same. Sometimes the main protein is completely different. I prefer to keep the same protein when switching food, but that is just my preference and not necessary. I usually take a week to switch over new foods. The back of the food bag will usually give some guidelines about how to switch. |
I like to transition over one or two weeks, not just because the transition to a different formula can cause some loose stools, I think the pup takes to the new food better if it is introduced slowly.....I have never just "sprung" anything new onto my dogs or kids....kind of just always "worked anything new" into the already established situation"! Kind of seems like it gives them time to get used to a couple of new pieces of whatever, placed in what they have already been eating. |
