New puppy: How much to feed?? I am getting a new puppy that is 12 wks old. How much should he be eating? Should I feed once or twice per day? |
Free feed and leave the food down all day. |
I don't free feed. I measure the food and feed 3x a day. I make sure they get enough to eat. I start with a 1/4 cup. A day. Puppies should get as much as they want as long they don't get obese with is rare but can happen. I have a feeding schedule that way I can potty train easier. I give training snack in between. They always eat. But if they were being picky I play games and they eat. But someones always home. If I was gone I would leave food out but dry only. The stuff that gets left out for long periods. I would still measure to keep track. otherwise you don't know how much they are eating |
You could free feed or here is a feeding calculator you could start out with: Dogs feeding chart - Nature's Logic |
I like this calculator it used the calories in the dogs food since they all can vary alot. You can Use the bag amount it says to feed also for a gauge. But it usually is alot more. Puppies should get as much as they want. I don't free feed my adult dog. He will eat 10lbs if I let him. I keep him at an ideal weight for his health. He is more like a few oz over. But ime when you let your Small breed dogs get 1-2 lbs you can see it in there walk. Its labored. I can see it in Moki when he is 7# 5oz or 6# 12 oz. The way he runs and moves. He probably should weight 6# 6 oz. Just by feeling his body. But a little weight isn't bad but way over is. Big dogs are different. They can have extra in lbs. You can Google the calculator you want. They are all pretty close. This is just easy imo. But feeding more times is better. Then less for puppies. But if you search you can find feeding adult dogs less is better. I do like to get my puppy to eat a little something for breakfast. She loves when I put a teaspoon or so of yogurt mixed in with about 1/4 c of kibble. Her favorite hungry time is around 1 - 2 pm. I add more dry and mix with canned food split 1/3 to her 2/3 to my Shih Tzu. She doesn't always finish it. So I will put out more dry food around our human dinner time. I do give her carrots (she's teething) and reward treats when working on training her. She's pretty easy to predict when she needs the loo. She goes to the door. So, I leave a puppy pad there so, if she can't wait till I get there, she's still not making a mistake if she goes on the pad. I do have to order one of those bells. I'm just afraid it will be a game for her and she will be ringing it all day long, lol. |
MY dogs are train with the bell. Moki is pretty good. But it becomes a dinner bell. Your giving to much lap time to the other dog bell. Get up and play bell. ect.. |
I think it would be kind of smart. Where do you get the bells? I guess I'll be on Amazon today, lol. I want to try it. Right now she goes to the door and scratches it with her paw, so she has the just. I'd like to save the door in the process. |
