Picky Eater Solved, Now Eats Too Fast?? You might have seen some posts from me regarding my 1yr picky eater. He has always been picky since I got him at 10 wks. I tried originally to get him to eat dry and really no success. I tried many diff kinds of wet foods (Merrick, Wellness, Science Diet), etc. Everytime we started to get his food out he would kinda hide and then come over to the bowl only to sniff it and walk away. He would eat very little, we'd put the food away for later, take it our again and re-heat and nothing, then very very late he'd eat. Everytime I'd buy a new brand of food he'd slop it up all on the 1st day and then the next day not be interested anymore and I was back to square one. This went on for months and months. Finally I bought Freshpet Vital Grain Free Slice n Serve Roll (chicken, beef, salmon and egg). The first day he ate it all up. And he's been doing the same thing everyday for a whole week. I am flabbergasted, it's like I have a different Yorkie. You have to keep it refrigerated and everytime I open the fridge to feed him he just stares and follows me until I put it down. I am so thrilled that I wanted to share this for those of you who have picky eaters there is hope. You just have to be persistent and hopefully try enough foods until you find what they like. Now the only issue I have (which is kinda silly) is that he woofs his food down so so so fast. I cut the slice in tiny pieces because I don't want him to be eating and swallowing whole pieces so fast. I've been timing him and he slops up his bowl between 1 to 2 mins, it's more like a minute and a half. Is this too fast? I've heard about slow feeding bowls but not sure if this is normal. |
Love it, so funny. It's nuts how much dogs love this stuff. I have mentioned before that we only feed it occasionally now, my dog makes me crazy when she knows it's in the house! She wakes me up to EAT. You might try a flat plate, spread it out and smash it into the plate with a fork. |
Fast, fast, fast I have to say that it never works for me putting his canned food on a flat plate and spreading it out flat. He still scarfs it up in no time flat. It's like he's slurping it up like you would a piece of spaghetti. Worries me so. |
Can you feed her her meals from a series of foraging toys, like kongs she will have to lick each bite from? She'll love the fun of working for her dinner, bringing to life her seeker/hunter genes in chasing her kong toy around the whole room for her meal. Some dogs just grab it and hold it between their paws and lick out the soft food but most, like Tibbe, actually love to keep the chase alive and it can take him up to 45 minutes to eat his meal from his 3 tiny kongs. I also feed him kibble from the kongs and he bats and rolls them around as one to four kibbles come out each roll. Takes a while to eat that way and it slows a fast eater way down. Given the choice, Tibbe always chooses dinner from his kong over a bowl of the same food. |
You can get a bowl with little raised areas which seems to slow down the gulping of food. |
Thanks All for the great replies. I searched online and found this: Brake-Fast Bowl, Slow Dog Bowl | Lambert Vet Supply |
