Hand Feeding Yorkie??? Just curious if anyone hand feeds their Yorkie. Just asking because my 1yr old guy is so so picky. I haven't hand feed him yet, but when I put his food down he mostly sniffs and walks away. Then if I give him dry I will take a few kibbles and put it on the floor and he seems interested and will eat them and then may eat some of the ones in his bowl. Again, I haven't hand fed, but I'm concerned that all he wants to do is play and not really be interested in food. I had his poop analyzed and his a happy normal boy, just so so picky. I've tried diff wet foods, diff dry foods, mixed them together, added parmesan cheese. He always seems interested in the new food the first day I give it to him, but sure enough the next couple of times I give it to him he starts to be back to his picky self. Please advise your thoughts as I don't want to spoil him by hand feeding, but I hope this is just a phase as he just turned 1 yr last month |
I hate to admit this, but if it is late in the day and they haven't eaten, I will sometimes start them off by handing them a few pieces and then telling them to eat. I can tell they are hungry but Teddy guards his bowl until Daisy finishes eating, then he will eat. I remember someone posted that they roll pieces of kibble on the floor and puppy chases it and then eats it. I thought that was so cute. |
I don't know if this will be helpful or not but my vet told me that if a dog is hungry, it will eat. There is no need to coax it etc. It knows that it has to eat to live. Personally, I've never had any problems with my boys appetite. He is a mini-pig! |
I know a normal dog will eat, but we leave wet food down when we leave the house for 4+ hours and when we return the foods is still uneaten. He doesn't seem to like the kibble that much, he'll eat a couple here and there but certainly not enough for a meal. I don't mind if he eats very late but I don't want him to then vomit bile because his stomach is empty. |
Mine aren't normal. They have never been food aggressive but Teddy will hold out from eating all day to tease Daisy with his food. Sometimes at 7pm they have still not eaten and I know they are hungry. Daisy eats a prescription low protein liver diet that she is not crazy about. She won't eat it unless you start her out with a few bites. Once she gets the taste she realizes she is starving and will gobble her food down. She will eat way too fast and sometimes I will just hand feed her about half of her food just to slow down her pace. She is determined to eat Teddy's food. We have tried everything. Feeding at separate times, crating one, feeding one inside and one outside, putting a little of his food in her bowl (which gives her gas and tummy aches all night), and more. If they eat at 10 PM or later they are up all night long going to the bathroom. I don't like Teddy to have a lot of food on his tummy at night because he has some sensitive tummy issues and sometimes wakes up early with tummy aches. I wish I didn't have to feed them different food but not much I can do. I am kind of out of ideas with them. |

Has he been to the vet who has examined him including weight etc? If he's at a good weight, he may just not want to eat as much as you think he should? I think ruling out any medical disorders is a must. Then, if the vet says everything is fine, I wouldn't worry. These dogs really don't need a lot of calories and wet food can be very rich and calorific. Which is a good thing! However, he may not need as much as you think and that is the reason he's not gulping it up? Just a theory until and unless you have been to the vet. What do you think? |

I just wanted to add that my baby is older and her vision is failing and she is stiff with arthritis. under the circumstances I don't mind giving her some extra pampering. She doesn't always wait for me to hand feed her. She has to eat bland food so it helps to coax her. And I think it is bonding for us. I wouldn't hand feed a puppy. |
I have fed Dinky by hand when he has not eaten all day. He is a picky eater. If his tummy gets too empty, he will yack up some yellow bile. The vet advised though to try to leave hand feeding as a special trick for when he is sick, off his food and really needs to eat. |
