Hair not growing back?? I have a 2 year old yorkie that I'm concerned her hair isn't growing back. She got groomed a few months ago… I had them cut her back short and leave her legs long like bell bottoms. Well, it doesn't seem like her hair is even growing back at all. It should be a lot longer by now since it's been AT LEAST 3 months since she's had her hair cut, but she's still not due for any length taken off because there's hardly anything there! So my question is, could there be an underlying issue? If so, what do you guys think it could be? She does have really dry skin and her hair is kind of thin to begin with. It seems like this was never an issue before. Could this be a food issue? I feed her and my yorkie/maltese mix Taste of the Wild. Could it just be the winter? She was just at the vet and the vet didn't say anything about her skin or anything that pertains to this. She said she looks perfectly healthy! Would a food change help maybe? I'm at a loss... |
I know when Buster had to have knee surgery his leg hair was shaved and it took forever for it to grow back. His hair has always been on the thin silky side. With dry skin issues you might want to consider adding a fish oil to the diet. |
When my girl was spayed in Dec. Her front arm and belly actually grown really fast, where they shaved her, but she's a cotton coat and cottons tend to grow fairly fast or average like humans. If she's a silky coat her coat may not grow as fast, otherwise, it might be how well she eats. I know that in my case, my dogs eating the better premium stuff I switched them to made a huge difference. I mostly noted with my jacks, their coat quality changed, my yorkie not as much since she's always been on premium. Might just consider any changes in her or her routine the month prior to the grooming and during. She might be missing certain nutrients or it might be a random thing. If anything you can also ask your vet when you next visit, as long as she's not showing any other signs to be concerned with it could probably wait till she gets her next checkup |
Her hair is definitely on the thin/silky side as well. My yorkie/maltese mix is the cottony hair, more like a maltese - hers grows at a normal rate. However, my yorkie's hair just seemed to stop growing all of a sudden. I will try the fish oil. That will definitely help with her skin, hopefully it will with the hair as well. Do you think I should try a food change? They love TOTW, but I was thinking about Fromm or Orijen. (Tried Acana before TOTW and they didn't seem to like it, Fromm & Orijen were my next two foods I wanted to try with them) Thoughts??? |
Maybe she's low on thyroid hormone. Might have the vet check her thyroid and other hormone levels. Slow hair growth can indicate a low level of hormone. |
I was thinking about that as well since I have hypothyroidism, it ran across my mind. I guess after I try the fish oil, and if nothing changes - I'll have them check her in April when my other dog gets updated on her shots. Thank you all :) |
Hair/fur does grow quite slowly... |
