How much do I feed new puppy? I am feeding Rocco 1/4 cup of Orijen Puppy Dry daily. He is a Yorkie and almost 2lbs. Now, but the feeding guide on the bag doesn't have a clear feeding amount for his weight range. I break up his 1/4 cup portion into 4 feedings throughout the day & set aside about 10 extra pieces broken in half and give that twice a day as treats for training. Am I feeding too much? Too little? He gobbles it up and always seems to want more. |
Here is a feeding calculator you could use as a guide: Dogs feeding chart - Nature's Logic |
Let them eat as much as they want when they are a puppy. Unless they have some unusual appetite and get big and fat. But normally they will eat alot during growth spurts. 1/4 for a 2lbs isn't to much. |
This is a growing baby. There is no clear specification for amount to feed for his weight range because there should not be any restriction on the amount you feed a growing baby!! Please feed this baby as much as he wants....he needs the calories to grow and develop his systems.....8 months old or older, you can start to worry about "feeding too much", but "feeding too much" should not even be a concern with a baby. Free feed so you dont end up with a baby in the throes of hypoglucemia. Trying to grow and develop and learn and do all the energy dependent activities that babies do, on 1/4 cup of food a day, seems to me not what is best for the baby, especially if the amount you are allowing, is enthusiastically eaten and he wants more!! Let that baby eat! Keep his "tank" fueled up and when he gets to be around 8 months old, you can start restricting his food intake if that is what you want to do. |
Feeding Rocco Thank you all very much for your advice. I am now feeding him freely without worrying about measuring. I picked up a Curly Bully Stick from my local pet store. He loves that thing! I give it to him when we are relaxing at home and want him sitting with us. It keeps him focused on chewing his stick and he doesn't nip constantly at us. I also picked up a bag of freeze-dried treats from Orijen, which is the puppy food he eats, so I figured it be okay... marshalls has organic sweet potato small bones by "Riley's" anyone here familiar with these? and thoughts on quality. ( the bag says wheat, corn, and soy free) |
