diarrhea Hi. I have a 9 month old yorkie. This past weekend I kept my son's 11 month old yorkie. The puppies ate some of each other's dog food. A day later my puppy got diarrhea. I stopped his dog food and fed him chicken and rice and pumpkin for a couple of days. I started him back on his food the 3rd day. His stool is still soft with diarrhea. It seems to be worst at night. It is not watery. The consistency is like pudding with a little mucus. He drinks water and has an appetite. But he still has the diarrhea. It has been 3 days. Trying to get him into Vet but they are all booked this week. I'm planning to take him in as a dropoff.I would appreciate any suggestions as to how I can get him over this bout of diarrhea and get his stool firmed up. He doesn't act like he is sick. During the day he doesn't have a BM just seems like it starts at night. Then he goes several times up until early morning. Has anyone else had this problem? Any suggestions? I am really starting to worry. I'm not getting much sleep because I am worried about him. |
Hmmmm....it doesn't sound like it's the food to me. I think it's probably a tummy bug or giardia or something....he does probably need that vet visit. |
Hi, sorry your pup isn't feeling well. I would probably just give him plain chicken and rice and take the pumpkin out. Then start back on regular food after a few days. |
I would just try the rice and chicken and eliminate the pumpkin... It works for some but not for others. When my boy eats something different and it upsets his tummy it takes about a full week for the stool to come right again. |
Thanks for all of the feedback. I was able to get my Smokie in to see the Vet. I took a stool sample and the test they ran all came back negative. Sent me home with a dewormer to give him when he feels better and told me to be consistent and give him chicken and rice for 5 days then gradually add his kibble. Said it was probably the food or the stress of having another dog in the home. This morning when he had his BM it had some blood in the diarrhea. I immediately called the vet and took a stool sample in for more testing to find out what was going on. Vet called and said Smokie tested positive for Giardia. He will be starting his medication today. Hopefully this will clear up the problem and get him back to normal. He's been a real trooper through all of this. Can't say the same for me...:) Really scary when you don't know what's going on with your baby! |
